Overall a Good Outfit

September 29, 2017

Styling Overalls for FallAG Black Straight Leg OverallsSeattle Style BloggerI’ve owned these overalls for a couple of years now, but only this season have I received several compliments on them.  Even one of my closest friends (you know the type – who may roll their eyes at your overalls and say endearingly: “only you can pull these off”), complimented these bibs.  And it’s true, I’m seeing gals rocking overalls all over town (and outside of the playground!).

Skinny leg, oversized, cropped, and even shorts – there’s an overall for everyone.  In particular, I’m loving them paired with fitted and flirty of-the-moment tops.  I’ve been coveting an oversized pair that I saw on a a woman on the street; perfectly worn with a fitted off-the-shoulder top and casual sandals.  I should have stopped to ask where she found hers.  This outfit was inspired by her look.

And this top?!  If this isn’t a throw-back to my youth, I don’t know what is??  I’m pretty sure I owned a lace-burnout fitted shirt like this one back in high school yet (as most things now), this one is just better.  So good in fact, I also bought the black!  Stay tuned…I have plans for this one with oversized denim and a bomber jacket.  It’s also in my suitcase to be worn this weekend with a pair of wide-leg, flowy pants.  Fitted but not too much…just right!

Blue {Velvet} Shoes

September 26, 2017

Mossimo Supply Co Target Blue Velvet BootiesBlue Velvet Booties Fall 2017Mossimo Target Blue Velvet Sock BootiesOk, if I have to mourn summer, I can tolerate it whilst wearing blue velvet booties.  I’ve been completely smitten with velvet for the past couple of seasons and now I want everything in this luxe fabric! It may become a little weird when I start wearing it all together (all.the.time)!

And (wait for it)…these sock booties are less than 40 bones!  No, really.  Target does it again!  As always, this is one of my first stops when looking to try a trend I’m not sure that I want to invest in.  Initially I was thinking that I wouldn’t get a lot of wear out of blue velvet booties, but I’ve already worn them three times in the week that they have been in my wardrobe.

Blue velvet aside, let’s also talk about a sock bootie.  I’ve been reluctant to try this one.  First, I have large feet, so I feel like the tightness around the ankle accentuates the size of my shoe.  Also, who wants super tight, elastic around their ankles (especially while wearing heels)??!  While these booties create a sock-like shape, they are slender but not tight.  Honestly, if these came in a different material or another color, I would snag a second pair!  Run, don’t walk to Target.  Supplies will not last long!

4 Fall Favorites

Clu Ruffled Top Fall 2017

With the change of season comes fresh fashion and a new wish list!  Below are 4 trends I’m loving for Fall 2017 and several pieces I’m currently coveting.  Happy Friday!

Cozy Knits: Isn’t fall synonymous with cozy sweaters perfect for bundling up and layering for chilly mornings and evenings?  This isn’t a trend or ground breaking yet I’m excited for the return of my sweaters every year the leaves begin to change!

Velvet Slippers: Velvet continues to be everywhere this year (as it was the luxe fabric for fall 2016 as well!).  This year I’m dying over pretty much everything in this fabric (jackets, kimonos, pants), but the sheen gives such beautiful texture to footwear and is an easy way to up your accessory game!

Sole Society | Urban Outfitters | Madewell X Tretorn | Joie | Sam Edelman

Ruffled Details: Yep, still going really strong!  I’m loving all of the shoulder and arm details, as I find a ruffled sleeves difficult to tuck-in to a jacket (which is a necessity come late fall and winter here in Seattle).  I also love all ruffles on pants and skirts, as the movement creates great interest.

J.Crew | Banana Republic | Alice + Olivia | Who What Wear

Sequins:  Always, day or night.  Enough said.  Also, sequins can be easier to wear for day in a lighter color such as rose gold…although black is always classic.  I’ve already worn my sequin pants to an event paired with a silk tank, but they could be worn during the day with a simple white tee and sneakers.

J.Crew Rose Gold Sequin SkirtSequin Pencil SkirtJ.Crew Sequin Pencil SkirtKnot Sisters Feelin' Fine T-ShirtWhile I admit to being a summer girl at heart, there are certain thrills that come with the change to the cooler months of fall and winter.  Among them are the rich textures and sparkling detailing that adorn our clothes as the days get shorter and the weather colder.  Although sequins can be worn throughout the year (and should!), seeing more of this sparkling fabric in stores reminds me that the festive season is around the corner.

However, please…PLEASE do not reserve sequins for your holiday parties!  It’s truly amazing how a white t-shirt can transform most any formal piece in your wardrobe.  Here my “Feelin’ Fine” tee adds some wit to an otherwise polished outfit.  A slouchy, collegiate cardigan also lends to a more casual vibe.  A knotted white tee paired with some sneakers could also be cool and even more casual.

And, a sequin pencil skirt can be such a versatile statement piece in your wardrobe.  Beautiful for nights out when worn with a silk cami or a tuxedo jacket and heels (even heeled booties).  Easy for the office with a sweater and kitten heels.  Or perfect for an afternoon brunch date with the trusty white tee and flats.  Go ahead, step outside of your comfort zone…everyone is guaranteed to notice!

Lady-like Destroyed DenimGingham and ruffled blouseI’ve been talking a lot about 90’s fashion of late; frankly because it is all the buzz this fall, as many styes are reminiscent of the era that brought us both “The Rachel” haircut and Doc Martins.  As a person who came of age in the 90’s (ah hem), this decade holds a special spot in my heart.  And my closet!  While drawing 90’s inspiration for the blog and last night’s “UNZIPPED” 90’s themed party, I realized that most of my wardrobe is inspired by this decade.

Take these destroyed, high-waisted jeans (for example)…I’m loving the return of relaxed fits and the higher rise.  And, while 20 years ago, I may have paired these jeans with an over-sized flannel and combat boots; a feminine blouse and classic pump make this look both more current and age appropriate.  A nod, if you will, to both Cher and Curt (for those too young for this reference: Clueless and Nirvana).

While the grunge-era may have put Seattle’s style scene on the map, it’s really the forward-thinking and community-minded citizens that continue to make this beautiful, Pacific Northwest city a desirable place to live.  And a Seattle charitable event close to my heart?  The annual “Wine, Women & Shoes” auction inspires both my creativity and feeds my soul.  What better way to spend a stylish evening than among girlfriends enjoying great food and wine provided by local chefs and wineries, a shop-for-a-cause marketplace filled with many local designers and retailers, and shoes (handbags too!).  But the real inspiration begins when you sit down and are treated to a presentation from a recipient of Olive Crest’s foster and adoption placement services.  Proceeds from the event directly benefit Seattle-area children in need of “forever-homes.”  The evening concludes with a fast-paced fashion show highlighting the latest trends and featuring local entrepreneurs as models.

Grab a girlfriend (or several), and join me November 10th as we raise a glass to benefit Seattle-area foster children.  And perhaps come home with a few new pairs of shoes (or an Italian-designed red handbag!).  Leave a comment or email me if you buy tickets – I would love to see you there!
