What I’m Lovin’: The “Skinny” on Skinny Jeans

January 28, 2014

Recently, a good friend of mine asked me to recommend a pair of skinny jeans that would be her first purchase in this genre of denim.  I think you all will agree with me that anything labeled as “skinny” is either intimidating (like the aforementioned jeans) or not as appealing (lattes, for example).  Regardless of their name, I can assure you that these jeans can be flattering on women of all figures, sizes and ages.
Now, given that these are her first pair, my recommendations were true blue, tried and true standard denim.  I love my black and grey jeans (often reaching for them more often than my blue ones) and I also can make a compelling argument for colored, printed and waxed denim.  But…what is a wardrobe without a simple, classic pair of blue jeans? Not too much distressing, fading and whiskering but also not pure, dark indigo – just a kick-around, dress-up/dress-down, cool pair of blue denim skinnies.
The Classic: J Brand Mid-Rise Skinny Jean
J Brand are probably my current favorites.  With no stitching detail on the rear pockets, they are a clean, great fitting pair of jeans.  Sometimes they tend to run small, so I would suggest trying multiple sizes.  I bought the mid-rise rail skinnies 2 years ago and still wear them a ton.
Like-Legging Jeans: AG The Legging Jean
AG makes a great pair of jeans.  The legging jean sounds scarier than they are – a super soft denim that is great for everyday wear.  Not too much stretch, making them too tight; however, they will stretch out, so you will want them form-fitting when you first put them on.
The Curve Hugger: Paige Verdugo Ultra Skinny Jean
Paige is often a favorite for girls with some curves (more generously cut in the hips and narrow in the legs).  These are their classic skinny jean in a very clean wash. Like most jeans, you will want these to be snug when you first try them, as they will stretch.
The No-Nonsense Jean: DL1961 Amanda Skinny Jean
DL1961 boasts amazing technology guaranteed not to bag out – and it really is true.  That means, however, no stretch or give.  These jeans really hold their shape and suck you in so, again, I would try multiple sizes keeping this in mind.  And, unlike the jeans above, they will not stretch with wear – so what you see, is what you get.
Jammie Jeans: Genetic Denim ‘The Shya’ Jean
Genetic makes a pair of jeans that honestly feels like you are wearing your jammies.  They maintain their shape (even for being so comfy) and wash well.  In fact, I am wearing my pair here.
Not Your Mom’s “Mom Jeans”: Citizens of Humanity Rocket Skinny Jean
Citizens of Humanity also makes a great jean.  The “rocket” has a high rise (9.5 inches compared to the standard 7-8”), which will seem really high if you are used to wearing low-rise jeans.  However, they are great for kid play (if you have kids or not) because you never have to worry about exposing your rear end when constantly bending over.  I was skeptical at first, but now I am a believer (with 3 pairs).
The Rockstar: Old Navy Rockstar Skinny Jean
These Old Navy jeans are aptly named as they are, not only a great fit, but also a rock’n price.  These are their classic blue skinny; however, I would also definitely recommend these jeans if you are looking to experiment with color, print or texture because their price point is unbeatable.  In fact, I am wearing the waxed version here.
Lastly, my skinny-jean rookie asked, “What shoes?” Any, really.  Of course tall boots and ballet flats are simple, but booties, oxfords and loafers work great too.  I fool around with cuffing versus tucking versus leaving straight depending on my mood and the shoe.  Some shoes beg for a bit of skin showing (an ankle bootie, for example) while a classic ballet flat or moccasin looks good with the jeans un-cuffed.  The only shoe I would caution against with skinny jeans is something too chunky (clogs, athletic shoes, etc.) that could throw off the proportions of the slim leg of the pants.
So there you have it – my best of the blues.  What are you favorites? Send them my direction; I’m always on the hunt for the perfect pair of jeans.  You can never have too many, right?!

What I’m Lovin’: Resolution Wear

January 27, 2014

It’s the time of year when all the mats at yoga, bikes at spinning or parking spots at the gym seem to be full.  I find myself amused and annoyed at the same time, seeing all of the new faces that are now invading “my spot.” In fact, my husband just started attending a yoga introductory class claiming that he is “New Years resolution guy” – better than continuing to be the “can’t-touch-your-toes guy.”
Regardless if you are making a new habit or keeping up with your current routine, we could all likely use motivation to get us out the door and hitting the pavement, pushing the pedals or rolling out the mat.  A couple of months ago, I began a new barre class in the “land of the beautiful people.” And, while I am not advocating putting on a full-face of make-up for a 6 am class, I have “uped” my game and bought a few new stylish workout pieces to motivate and make me feel cute as I stare at myself in the mirror for an hour.

Zella Live-In Leggings
I can’t say enough great things about this brand made by Nordstrom.  They have really fun designs at a fraction of the cost of other athletic apparel retailers.  I have a purple pair of these leggings that I bought at the Anniversary sale last summer and I have been coveting this berry-color pair.
Lululemon No Limits Tank
Athleta Hayes Valley Top
I am always on the hunt for the perfect slouchy fit; which is surprisingly difficult to find in athletic wear.  This top fits the bill with a slight bat wing sleeve and an open neck.  I bought the blue, which brightens up my otherwise black and grey ensembles.
Sweaty Betty Leg Warmers
I wish I had the guts (and the legs) to wear these.  I wore leg warmers years (and years) ago when I danced but I’m not sure that I could rock them now.  More power to you if you can!
Yoga Mat
I just got this for Christmas and I am loving it (so is the aforementioned hubs).  I must warn you; however, it is really stinky at first.  I wasn’t aware of this fact until I rolled out my brand new mat my first class after the holiday and nearly passed out from the fumes.  Air it out but do NOT spray it with any kind of oil (like tea tree) – the mat is antibacterial; therefore an oil will break it down.  Would have been good to know…

Lucy Track Goddess Tight
My Lucy running pants are a favorite with just the right fit and, most importantly, staying power.  I don’t feel the need to tug mid-workout!
Zella Stripe Half Zip
Lucy Luxe Fleece Jacket
I saw this in the store today and absolutely love the styling with the contrasting quilted body and fleece arms.  However, it’s deeply discounted with an extra 30% off the sale price so, sizes are limited.  Here is another alternative: http://www.zappos.com/marmot-variant-jacket-jet-black
Lululemon Ta Ta Tamer
Since having kids, I do not fool around when it comes to my sports bras for running (or for any high-impact sport, for that matter). This bra has been redesigned since I invested in mine, but with Lulu’s attention to detail and flawless quality; I am sure that it is new and improved!
SmartWool Running Socks
I got a pair of these in my stocking last year, and they are my go-to when the temperature drops.  They are still thin and lightweight with the perfect amount of contouring to grip your feet but Smartwool, so they are sure to keep your toesies warm.

Nike Epic Run Dri-Fit Pants
C9 Champion Racer Bra
I have tried many a sports bra and there is not one that I like more for low/medium impact sports than the Champion bras found at Target.  I particularly love the new patterns, like Popsicle Pink.
Under Armour Undeniable Tank
I love this simple cotton tank – with all of the crazy patterned, multi-strapped, sweat-wicking tanks on the market this is a great, basic go-to.  It wears and washes well, not too form-fitting but slouchy enough for a fun bright sports bra to peak out under.
Lululemon Scuba Hoodie
This jacket is a classic, warm and cozy sweatshirt.  It is too thick to wear under another jacket, so this is worn on top.  I’ve had mine for years and still reach for it constantly.
Thanks for reading and keep the feedback coming!

What I’m Lovin’: Intimates

January 24, 2014

Well…this is my inaugural post.  It’s not going to look pretty and not entirely how I imagined it, but I’m letting that go.  I’ll get there.  I’ve become more comfortable adopting this “not-everything-perfect-yet” approach since having kids, but it is definitely becoming more of the norm as I have started my own business.  Sooo…in short, this is a journey and, given that you’re reading this, you’re along for the ride!

Did I grab your attention with this title?? I hope so!  Valentine’s Day is around the corner, so I thought that this would be a perfect occasion to talk about undergarments.

Ok, honestly, no one likes to spend money on something that you are not going to see, or see very much of.  I’m here to tell you that you absolutely must, MUST invest in appropriate under pinnings.  Anyone who has been properly fitted for a bra will tell you what a life changing experience having appropriately-sized undergarments can be.  Undergarments can be the linchpin that elevates your look from mediocre to fabulous; enhancing your figure by allowing your clothes to properly drape and often providing necessary coverage. So take the plunge and buy some great undergarments – you will NOT regret it…I guarantee it!

Hanky Panky Thong

I’ve recently converted one of my brief-wearing friends (she will remain nameless) and I was surprised to learn that there are still people out there not embracing this skinny jeans, silky pant and jersey knit necessity.  A Hanky Panky thong is a wardrobe staple and, contrary to nay-sayers, this particular brand is very, very comfortable.  Please, ban panty-lines and give it a try.  Also to note, Hanky Pankys not only come in low, regular and “retro” high rises but now they offer petite and plus sizes as well.

Lace Camisole

This is a great tank for plunging necklines or cropped hemlines because the lace peeks out; adding a little interest but keeping everything appropriately covered.  I would suggest buying one in a favorite color and you would be amazed at how much wear you will get out of this cami.  I have one in a dark burgundy – perfect under all of my grey and black sweaters or, paired with my favorite burgundy jeans, it subtly compliments my looks.  I particularly like the length of this camisole because it hits mid-hip, so I never feel that it is creeping up.

Intimates
Convertible T-Shirt Bra

A seamless cup is often necessary when wearing a t-shirt or another body-skimming fabric like jersey or silk.  I love this bra in particular because of the fun straps, which will be fantastic under a tank when the temperatures rise.  In my opinion, nothing is less exciting than a nude strap peeking out from a tank (although a nude cup is one of life’s unfortunate necessities).  Also, the straps have a hook so that you can create a racer-back when needed – genius! I just bought this bra in the shocking pink…for my own enjoyment.

Mid-Thigh Shaper

Shapewear comes in a variety of options, depending on your needs (meaning both problem-areas and wardrobe function).  For example, a friend recently borrowed a very curve-hugging (and rock’n ) jersey dress that begs for these thigh shaper shorts.  Panty lines are eliminated as everything is sucked-in and smoothed.  My only word of caution would be to practice using the restroom prior to an event…or don’t drink a lot, as getting out of these can be a bit tricky. I would also definitely recommend the tank version, they’re great for everyday wear: Shaping Tank.

_6631701(1)
Slip

This slip is great for those times when you don’t need the structure of shapewear but a dress still requires some additional coverage.  Plus, a basic slip will allow clothes to hang better over your body, particularly when wearing hosiery.  Nude is a great option; perfect for the light colors and loose fabrics worn in warmer temperatures, but black is a necessity for pairing with dark clothes (lest the slip should peek out).

lady_godiva_1_
Chemise

Just for fun, I thought that I would include this one. Definitely not a requirement for undergarment wear but this chemise could be a beautiful addition for wearing in your boudoir.  Soft jersey adds great comfort while the styling and lace accents are romantic details.  Of course, I love both pink colors!  With Valentine’s Day around the corner, this could be a beautiful addition to your…wardrobe.  I know my husband, for one, would like to see less of my flannel jammies and over-sized tees!

Finally, caring for your “delicates” is very important.  Never (ever) run undergarments through the dryer!  Hand wash or wash on the delicate cycle and then hang dry.  A lingerie bag can protect delicate fabrics as can a lingerie wash specifically designed for undergarments.

Also to note, Bare Necessities (where I found many of the items mentioned above) is currently offering a great sale – 25% off regularly-priced items with free shipping over $70 ($6.95, 60-day returns).

Please keep the feedback coming! Let me know what you think…both about my selections and this new blog. And, as always, thanks for reading.

I greeted the new year feeling inspired with a renewed intention for my account; to share with you the goodies I love, wear, try. Unfiltered and honest. That’s what I’m here for. But then...2021 arrived feeling much like her older sister, 2020. Instead, I’ve avoided a lot of social media; choosing to tune into various news outlets and into my family. So, HERE WE ARE. A post proving that I got dressed yesterday, wearing some of my new favorites (these @flamingosshoes white boots!) and steady stand-bys (year 2 wearing this @notmondaymercantile beanie on repeat). I took the kids out after school to run a couple of errands and connect with a business I love to support; we made plans for a spring share. Man, it felt good to get out! And now, I’m posting early before I’ve read the morning news. So, it’s happened.

Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you all but enjoyed a nice long break. Heading back home after some snow time and I’m feeling re-energized (for now). Isn’t it funny how a change in the calendar can make you feel different? Are you a “new year, new you” kinda gal or more indifferent? I do like a good reset. Even though we’ll be doing more of the same early this year, I’m feeling more optimistic. For now. Cheers to 2021!
