Friday’s Favorites: Totally Plaid Out

August 29, 2014

There is a special place in my heart for everything ’90’s – “Reality Bites”, Nirvana and Doc Martins are among the pop-culture icons of my youth. Lucky for me; slouchy jeans, overalls, and plaid (and even those Docs) are huge trends for fall. In particular, my love for plaid seems to be shared by the fashion world because the iconic print is currently gracing everything from hats to shirts, and from shoes to pants.  With so much variation and many offerings, you can easily adorn yourself in a little (see the Rag & Bone jeans below) or as much as you like!  Just remember to stay clear of pairing plaid with overalls and/or Timberland boots (and these are back too), unless you want to look like an urban woodsman!

Friday Favorites – check-in every Friday for Five of my Favorite Finds.

This Friday I’m loving boho chic – think fringe, slouchy silhouettes and eclectic prints. Perhaps all together these elements may read too “Coachella”, but add a few pieces into your standard rotation for a cool fall update.

What’s in My Shopping Bag: The GAP

August 20, 2014

b55e84bb0fc93bdc5b01ff7c68c0f45e
40% Off for GAP Cardmembers NOW!! (August 20-24)

As many of you know (or have figured from my previous posts), I am an online shopping aficionado. I wish that I could chalk it up to having kids and a busy schedule…but truth-be-told, it’s just so easy and fun to look (and buy). I make it into the stores pretty frequently, but the ease of online shopping and potential discounts still have their allure.

First remember, I have 3 Golden Rules to online shopping:
1) Never, NEVER buy final sale. It’s generally a mistake and a deal is never a deal if you don’t want to keep it but have to (regardless of the price).
2) Free shipping and returns, always. I’m frequently frustrated by those tricky sites that offer free shipping and “easy returns” (read: not free, just easy). The only exception to this rule is when you can return to your local brick-and-mortar establishment (even then, consider what you pay for parking).
3) Don’t keep if it’s not prefect and you don’t love it.  Sometimes online purchases have a way of staying in our closets even if they’re not 100% awesome.  Something about the ease of trying in your home lends itself to laziness when required to ship or return to a store.  Ask yourself: “is this exactly what I’m looking for?” and “would I have bought this if I was in the store?”

With these rules in mind, for the next 4 days The GAP is offering 40% off regular-price items for cardmembers (both in-store and online).  Act fast, this is a limited time offer!

Below are the items you will find currently in my shopping bag:

Silky Plaid Shirt
Leather Slip-On Sneaker

Quilted Moto Jacket
Cap Sleeve Dress

Burnout Dip-Dye Tee
Sexy Boyfriend Jeans

Silky Plaid Shirt | Leather Slip-On Sneakers | Quilted Moto Jacket | Cap-Sleeve Denim Dress | Burnout Dip-Dye Tee | Destroyed Sexy Boyfriend Jeans

I continue to obsess over moto-detailing, destroyed jeans and slip-on sneakers.  Lucky for me, these are trends that continue into fall this year.  The jeans, in particular, are an amazing price – it seems the more destroyed the denim, the higher the price tag.  And, I am so into plaid right now! The resurgance of all things 1990’s is nostalgic of my high school years…am I dating myself??

Hope you enjoy my picks and happy shopping! Please share your favorite sites, sales and tricks – I’m always eager to learn your finds.  Thanks for reading! ~Jenn

Outfits: Summer’s Fall Sweater

August 15, 2014

IMG_7863

Hard to believe, but mid-August can be sweater weather here in Seattle. Regardless of where you reside; as the late summer evenings cool, now may be as good a time as any to break out your favorite fall knits.

Look 1: Fall-Worthy
This outfit is perfect for early fall, when it’s chilly but not yet cold enough to require a jacket. If you needed an extra layer, you could even do a tee under this chambray shirt – leaving it open for added visual interest. Conversely, if it’s not yet truly cold enough – sub a tee or a tank for the long sleeve shirt.

What I’m Lovin’: Wear Now, Into Fall

August 11, 2014

As the temperatures remain consistently warm and summer staples finally get marked-down, it’s hard to wrap your head around fall dressing.  However (and before you know it), kids will be returning to school and the leaves will begin to change…sweater weather.  In preparation, I like to “ease” into my fall wardrobe by integrating a few fall staples into my summer rotation.  The three picks below are perfect as the nights start to get cooler (and darker earlier), yet just as easy to pair with your favorite summer tank or flip flops!

Oversized Cardigan: I just snapped up the Free People cardigan – I can’t wait for the booties and jeans it begs for in the fall.  In the meantime, it will be perfect over my favorite maxi dress or even paired with shorts and my swim suit during my upcoming beach vacation.  Stay tuned…I’m inspired for an outfit pic!

Ankle Bootie: These continue to be a staple for Fall 2014; outshining my favorite tall boots yet again…the bootie is here to stay.  While these are an easy fall basic when paired with skinny jeans, try them now with your favorite skirt or dress (long or short).  Such a sassy alternative to those sandals you have been wearing on end for the past several months.  Plus, no pedicure required!

Moto Jeans: I am obsessed with all of the moto detailing still on-trend for fall – the more zippers, seams and quilting, the better! I’m wearing mine now with a loose tank and strappy heels for a little lady-like edge.  And a great way to spruce up the basic jean, sweater, boot combo when the temperatures fall.  Just be careful when pairing with your leather jacket and/or moto booties…you don’t want to look like your headed to your local biker bar!

Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted t Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted the new year feeling inspired with a renewed intention for my account; to share with you the goodies I love, wear, try. Unfiltered and honest. That’s what I’m here for. But then...2021 arrived feeling much like her older sister, 2020. Instead, I’ve avoided a lot of social media; choosing to tune into various news outlets and into my family. So, HERE WE ARE. A post proving that I got dressed yesterday, wearing some of my new favorites (these @flamingosshoes white boots!) and steady stand-bys (year 2 wearing this @notmondaymercantile beanie on repeat). I took the kids out after school to run a couple of errands and connect with a business I love to support; we made plans for a spring share. Man, it felt good to get out! And now, I’m posting early before I’ve read the morning news. So, it’s happened.

Please stay safe, remain respectful, and true to yourself. Social media is a beautiful way to connect, create, and inspire...but can also be a dangerous rabbit hole of misinformation and an opportunity for people to behave in a way they ordinarily wouldn’t in person. Off my soap box. Have a lovely Friday!#wordsfrommyheart #realoutfitgram #flamingosshoes #whiteboots #notmondaymoments
Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you all but enjoyed a nice long break. Heading back home after some snow time and I’m feeling re-energized (for now). Isn’t it funny how a change in the calendar can make you feel different? Are you a “new year, new you” kinda gal or more indifferent? I do like a good reset. Even though we’ll be doing more of the same early this year, I’m feeling more optimistic. For now. Cheers to 2021!

Also, posted in stories a nearly identical photo of us from last January at the top of @schweitzer_mountain. While the photos look the same, it’s fun to think that we now are Sandpoint homeowners! A positive outcome of 2020. #newyearonthemountain #snowbest #schweitzermountain #skifamily
Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all the boxes this year. Thinking of everyone not able to spend time with loved ones this year. I’m so grateful for our little family but really missing my parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, my in-laws. Over a year seems far too long to be apart; but we all need to continue to be safe. It matters. #christmassweater #christmas2020 #staysafestayhome #vintagesweater

Like the new-to-me homemade marshmallow recipe, @thekirstyfiles and I have the pleasure of bringing to you in partnership with @pacific_place. We encourage you to invite a few pals to a zoom date, pop a bottle of bubbly, and create these delicious confections together. I promise they’re relatively fool proof (I pulled them off!) AND a sugar-high afternoon spent with friends (even virtually) will be sure to get you in the holiday spirit! Tune in to Pacific Place’s IGTV or YouTube to see the full tutorial, including my gaff when my marshmallow began moving into the “hard ball” territory (note: this recipe does require a candy thermometer and the ability to read it!). Cheers to making the most out of holiday 2020! #homemademarshmallows #pacificplaceseattle #craftingtogether

The belly laughs, chit chat, and groans (as we tried on a number of jeans) provided the escape from reality that I needed. Sometimes you don’t realize just how much you miss something until you get to enjoy it again!

Other things I love? Soft luxury cashmere, designer denim that fits like a glove, and packable hats (yes, packable!). All can be found @willaseattle; a small, women-owned boutique located in the heart of the Queen Anne neighborhood in Seattle. Be sure to check out our stories as @thekirstyfiles and I share holiday-perfect gifts for your sister, mother, girlfriends...yourself! Lucky for Kirsty and I, our husbands also know the lovely owner, Liz (and she has our wishlists on file)!

Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for you Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for yourself, aka #stayathomestyle. Sure, 2020 may be the year of the sweatpant (combined with a sleeping bag-like coat, as seen here). And yes, a mask chain is this year’s hottest accessory. BUT I still take care to actually get dressed each day. And while lipstick may no longer be a part of my daily routine (I mean, was it ever??), it’s still important to be pulled together..if only for my own mental health. And even if no one else sees it but the grocery clerk. #whatmamaworemonday #sweatpantsseason

On the eve of Black Friday sales bonanza, I hope t On the eve of Black Friday sales bonanza, I hope to inspire, remind, urge, and even beg you to ignore all of the crazy cyber sales that have been creeping into your inbox for the past week and instead SHOP SMALL this holiday season. Yes, perhaps it’s less convenient and even less of a “deal” but this pandemic is putting an even greater strain on the small and local businesses that are the absolute life blood of our communities. And, in addition to supporting an entrepreneur and neighbor, you’ll likely find more creative, individual, and unique gifts for your loved ones by shopping a small business.
