Even if you can only dare to flare…

September 30, 2015

how to style flare jeans for every day

Kirsty is back today sharing tips on how to make fall’s 70’s revival relevant for everyday wear…with flare.

Maybe you’re not quite ready for fringe or suede or over-sized floppy hats?  Just you wait.  In the meantime the most flattering move you can make is letting flare denim back into your closet.  Or perhaps it never left.  You know who you are – you non-skinny adaptors.

Not judging.

Either way, 70’s-inspired fashion is hot this fall, and we are super excited to see major flares back in the action.

These jeans are just a bit tighter up top, slightly more flared on the bottom, and a tad higher waisted than their bootcut cousin.  And super flattering all around.  A butt’s best friend and legs for days.

I Dig Them.

Best paired with a clog or wedge heel.  The exaggerated flare can swallow up your silhouette.  Clogs are a great way to incorporate a shoe with a bit more height but still reasonable for day wear.  No wobbles, no excuses.  We will save all the AMAZING clogs {like these!} we’ve been seeing for later this week.

Outfits: 70’s Style Revival

September 29, 2015

P1120676

If you follow along with my fashion adventures on Instagram, you may already be tired of this dress.  Because, clearly, I am in LOVE.  Aside from the ease of getting dressed with one simple piece, I am totally on-board with the entire 1970’s trend that is continuing from summer straight into fall!  I’ve already shared my love for flares and flannel, and with the addition of clogs, a sherpa-lined vest, and a poncho; my fall wardrobe is greatly influenced by the throw-back to this fashionable era.

As I’ve noted in previous posts, just be careful that you’re look doesn’t ready entirely too retro (you want to look fashion-forward rather than in costume).  I achieve this here by adding more modern accessories that are still in keeping with the vibe of the dress – a peep toe bootie isn’t too straight-laced and the slouchy, tasseled clutch echoes the tassels on the dress (and the amazing navy color!)

Finally, have we talked about how a red lip can transform your look (if not your entire outlook on life?!)?  I generally tend to keep my makeup look simple, but a pop of lip color can really brighten your complexion, not-to-mention take a look from good to great!  Particularly this time of year (as we lose our summer glow), some color can do wonders for drawing attention to your face.

Flannel Fashion Round-Up

September 24, 2015

Thursday’s roundup consists of two favorite outfits from the past year that are still making appearances.

Aside from being favorites, these outfits help to show the versatility of a great flannel shirt. Are you tired of hearing about flannels yet?  They are just so good it’s hard to stop.

I can think of so many hashtags right now.  But I won’t!

First up, grab a flannel and layer it tied around the waste.  Let this be your true intention, it is perfectly fine never going around your shoulders.  This is a great way if your feeling a little too exposed or need to add some definition to your waist, or interest to a great dress.

The trick to pulling this off is to keep the dress or top/bottom on the fitted side, otherwise you could end up looking sloppy.

dress – Monrow
shirt – Treasure & Bond, similar, similar
hat – Madewell
shoes – Splendid
sunglasses – Michael Kors, similar
bracelets – Guitar Strings, also available at Queen Anne Dispatch.  Madewell.  Gorjana.
Second.  Sometimes I just don’t think about adding another layer to a layer, but I love the effect when I do take the extra second to pull it all together.  Of course, this is often dictated by the state of organization my closet is in.  Ugh.
Lightweight extra layers are kind of clutch during the fluctuating fall weather.  There are so many great vests the season, a fur or denim vest was made for a flannel partner.
Best advice on layers, try it, and then take note.  You don’t know what will work together until you try it on.  Sometimes it’s surprising.

vest – Sanctuary, similar {and seriously amazing}
jeans – 7 for all Mankind, Hautelook old
boots – Rag & Bone
lips – MAC in MAC Red

Spend some time playing dress-up.  Invite your favorite, honest girlfriend over – think simon cowell not paula.  Maybe bake some cookies and pop some bubbly.  It’s a great way to spend an evening and boost your closet confidence.

We are all in this together.
xo,
Kirsty & Jenn.

Falling for Flannel

September 23, 2015

As promised, Kirsty has graciously agreed to share some plaid flannel inspiration.  Mostly, she believes flannel is a good reason to love fall.

Well for part of the country at least, fall is slowly settling in, days are getting more crisp and nights are chilly, but the sun is still mostly shining.  This is the time of year when you need sun screen and an umbrella, and maybe a scarf…and flip flops…

Honestly though, fall is my very favorite season, and albeit that I am totally freezing in this mild fall weather, I am excited to welcome back my autumn friends on a more regular basis.  Really that whole conspiracy about your blood thinning, I believe it.

One of my favorite autumn pieces is flannel shirts.  They are sort of perfect for fall.

Lightweight enough to layer under sweaters and jackets, yet warm enough to ward off the chill on their own.  Awesome plaid color combinations and styles.  Crazy comfortable, dare I say pajama level.  Stylish with everything.  Hello I have on metallic oxfords and I love the combo.

{outfit details} shirt: Billabong | jeans: Rag & Bone (old) | shoes: Matisse, similar | earrings: Lucia K. Jewelry this is Kirsty’s line | necklaces: Lucia K. Jewelry (available on request) | bracelet: Kendra Scott | rings: Gorjana

Check back tomorrow and the rest of the week, as Kirsty and I continue to share more flannel trends and styling ideas just in time for fall.

Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted t Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted the new year feeling inspired with a renewed intention for my account; to share with you the goodies I love, wear, try. Unfiltered and honest. That’s what I’m here for. But then...2021 arrived feeling much like her older sister, 2020. Instead, I’ve avoided a lot of social media; choosing to tune into various news outlets and into my family. So, HERE WE ARE. A post proving that I got dressed yesterday, wearing some of my new favorites (these @flamingosshoes white boots!) and steady stand-bys (year 2 wearing this @notmondaymercantile beanie on repeat). I took the kids out after school to run a couple of errands and connect with a business I love to support; we made plans for a spring share. Man, it felt good to get out! And now, I’m posting early before I’ve read the morning news. So, it’s happened.

Please stay safe, remain respectful, and true to yourself. Social media is a beautiful way to connect, create, and inspire...but can also be a dangerous rabbit hole of misinformation and an opportunity for people to behave in a way they ordinarily wouldn’t in person. Off my soap box. Have a lovely Friday!#wordsfrommyheart #realoutfitgram #flamingosshoes #whiteboots #notmondaymoments
Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you all but enjoyed a nice long break. Heading back home after some snow time and I’m feeling re-energized (for now). Isn’t it funny how a change in the calendar can make you feel different? Are you a “new year, new you” kinda gal or more indifferent? I do like a good reset. Even though we’ll be doing more of the same early this year, I’m feeling more optimistic. For now. Cheers to 2021!

Also, posted in stories a nearly identical photo of us from last January at the top of @schweitzer_mountain. While the photos look the same, it’s fun to think that we now are Sandpoint homeowners! A positive outcome of 2020. #newyearonthemountain #snowbest #schweitzermountain #skifamily

Like the new-to-me homemade marshmallow recipe, @thekirstyfiles and I have the pleasure of bringing to you in partnership with @pacific_place. We encourage you to invite a few pals to a zoom date, pop a bottle of bubbly, and create these delicious confections together. I promise they’re relatively fool proof (I pulled them off!) AND a sugar-high afternoon spent with friends (even virtually) will be sure to get you in the holiday spirit! Tune in to Pacific Place’s IGTV or YouTube to see the full tutorial, including my gaff when my marshmallow began moving into the “hard ball” territory (note: this recipe does require a candy thermometer and the ability to read it!). The belly laughs, chit chat, and groans (as we tried on a number of jeans) provided the escape from reality that I needed. Other things I love? Soft luxury cashmere, designer denim that fits like a glove, and packable hats (yes, packable!). Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for you Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for yourself, aka #stayathomestyle. Sure, 2020 may be the year of the sweatpant (combined with a sleeping bag-like coat, as seen here). And yes, a mask chain is this year’s hottest accessory. BUT I still take care to actually get dressed each day. And while lipstick may no longer be a part of my daily routine (I mean, was it ever??), it’s still important to be pulled together..if only for my own mental health.
