Friday Favorites: Fashion-Inspired Halloween Costumes

October 30, 2015

When faced with having to come up with a last minute costume (yours truly), you can easily turn clothes you may already own into a fashion-icon costume.  Below are several of my favorite fashion costume inspirations:

Channel your inner Audrey in “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” by pairing opera-length gloves and a multi-strand pearl necklace with your LBD.  A quick trip to the costume store will easily net you a cigarette holder and tiara.  If you really need to hit it home, carry a robin’s egg blue shopping bag.

Do you have a plaid mini lurking in your closet?  Aside from plaids current fashion resurgance, break that bad boy out to represent the ultimate 90’s fashion icon, Cher from “Clueless.”  Bonus points if your BFF also dones a plaid skirt suit…as if?!

This is what you may see me sporting Halloween night.  Tulle skirts are seemingly everywhere; pair with a pink, ribbed tank (bra optional), stappy heels, and some unrully curls and you’re the spitting image of SJP in the intro to “Sex and the City.”

Black waxed jeans or leather leggings belted with a tight black tee and a leather jacket – you’re instantly transformed into Sandy…the one at the end of “Grease.”  Simply tease your hair and brush up on your dance moves!

Enjoy a happy and safe Halloween!  As always, thanks for reading! ~Jenn

Wear-To-Work Wednesday: Walk in These Heels

October 28, 2015

Michelle+Obama+Heels+Kitten+Heels+qBeS1Ez7sbYl

The “wearable” heel is not an oxymoron.  The revival of the kitten heel demonstrates that women can have a stylish shoe that (dare-I-say) is also comfortable.  After all, it’s difficult to take someone seriously when they limp into the meeting…or refuse to stand.

In particular, I love bright colors combined with the rich texture of suede or subtle detailing such as a tassel or zipper.  The shoes below can elevate even the most basic of outfits – the good news is that none of them have heels over 3 inches!  Just note that for a shorter heel, I generally prefer a pointed-toe because you can still enjoy the leg-lengthening benefits, as the eye is drawn down the foot, without the height of a higher heel.

I had a good laugh over this one…keep this sport in mind the next time you find yourself sprinting for the bus!

Wear-to-Work Wednesday: Dress like a Boss

October 21, 2015

WEB_AKS3531-600x600

I’m starting a new segment called “Wear to Work Wednesday” for all of you professional gals killing it at work.  Just because you have to dress with polish, doesn’t mean that you have to skimp on style.  Weekly I hope to inspire you with my selections and provide tips for incorporating trends while looking like you belong in the boardroom.

Creative Director: You have the right to bare arms in the workplace, yet you want to keep your look sophisticated.  The “rule of skin” is never more important than when dressing for work.  When exposing one body party, be sure to keep the rest of your look conservative and covered-up.  You want to keep people focused on your hard work, so definitely leave the short hemlines and cleavage enhancing tops for the weekend!

In particular, I’m loving the sleeveless turtlenecks gracing the racks this fall.  Turtlenecks inherently draw the eye toward the face, and the sleeveless top is fashion-forward without being too trendy.  Add a reasonable height wedge heel in the must-have lace-up silhouette of the season and you look professional and stylish.

Polished Professional: Want to get dressed in a snap yet look utterly put-together at the same time?  A dress is the professional woman’s secret weapon for commanding attention and getting to that early breakfast meeting on time!  Again, pay attention to hemlines and the fit of the dress to ensure that your look reads boss rather than good time.

The stretch material of the classic sheath dress below is crucial to looking polished at work.  Not too clingy, the knit shows your shape yet allows you to move comfortably during your presentation.  You can make this dress less predictable by adding an ankle bootie in a soft suede color and a statement necklace draws attention to your face, while exuding confidence.

This classic satchel in deep emerald green compliments both of the above looks.  While the shape may be simple, the edgy zipper details and gunmetal closure convey that you are not all business.

How-To: YOU Can Wear Culottes

October 15, 2015

P1120995

I like to follow trends, yet don’t consider myself to be “trendy.”  The great thing about having personal style is incorporating fashion trends in an authentic way that resonates both with your aesthetic and your lifestyle.

Take, for example, the denim culotte.  You might say: “Me? Never!”  After all, where would you wear such things?? But, keeping in mind a few simple rules for wearing wide-leg pants, you can easily pair culottes with clothes you already own…and wear everyday.

Just remember these culotte commandments: 1) wear heels to give you some lift; elongating your leg line.  Flats with wide legs may make you appear short and squat (unless you have super model legs and then many rules don’t apply to you!) and 2) pair culottes with a shorter or cropped top (doesn’t have to be an actual crop top) or tuck in your shirt to create a waist line, which balances the volume of the pant.

P1130007 P1130043P1130063P1130059

Now, wouldn’t a pair of sky-high platform booties be amazing paired with these culottes?? Yet, I would look ridiculous teetering around the playground…I really did pick up my kids from school wearing this outfit.  And this is why it’s important, when applying fashion trends, to consider both your personal style and also (and often most importantly) your lifestyle.  For me, the clogs seem much more reasonable (and equally awesome).P1130038

What I’m Lovin’: Shopbop Friends & Family Sale

October 14, 2015

FP_sb_20151013_friendsfamily_1-0

Exciting news, especially for your fall wardrobe!  The Shopbop Friends & Family sale is live now thru October 15th.  This is a great opportunity to stock up on basics as well as invest in pieces, such as coats and boots, that will see you through the season.  Hurry, prices go up in 2 days and inventory is limited.

One word of advice on shopping a site-wide sale such as this one – use the search function to narrow your criteria; this could be by item type (ex. suede skirt), brand, and even size.  Or, shop my picks below.  I either own several of these pieces or currently have them in my own shopping bag!

Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted t Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted the new year feeling inspired with a renewed intention for my account; to share with you the goodies I love, wear, try. Unfiltered and honest. That’s what I’m here for. But then...2021 arrived feeling much like her older sister, 2020. Instead, I’ve avoided a lot of social media; choosing to tune into various news outlets and into my family. So, HERE WE ARE. A post proving that I got dressed yesterday, wearing some of my new favorites (these @flamingosshoes white boots!) and steady stand-bys (year 2 wearing this @notmondaymercantile beanie on repeat). I took the kids out after school to run a couple of errands and connect with a business I love to support; we made plans for a spring share. Man, it felt good to get out! And now, I’m posting early before I’ve read the morning news. So, it’s happened.

Please stay safe, remain respectful, and true to yourself. Social media is a beautiful way to connect, create, and inspire...but can also be a dangerous rabbit hole of misinformation and an opportunity for people to behave in a way they ordinarily wouldn’t in person. Off my soap box. Have a lovely Friday!#wordsfrommyheart #realoutfitgram #flamingosshoes #whiteboots #notmondaymoments
Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you all but enjoyed a nice long break. Heading back home after some snow time and I’m feeling re-energized (for now). Isn’t it funny how a change in the calendar can make you feel different? Are you a “new year, new you” kinda gal or more indifferent? I do like a good reset. Even though we’ll be doing more of the same early this year, I’m feeling more optimistic. For now. Cheers to 2021!

Also, posted in stories a nearly identical photo of us from last January at the top of @schweitzer_mountain. While the photos look the same, it’s fun to think that we now are Sandpoint homeowners! A positive outcome of 2020. #newyearonthemountain #snowbest #schweitzermountain #skifamily
Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all the boxes this year. Thinking of everyone not able to spend time with loved ones this year. I’m so grateful for our little family but really missing my parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, my in-laws. Over a year seems far too long to be apart; but we all need to continue to be safe. It matters. #christmassweater #christmas2020 #staysafestayhome #vintagesweater
Let’s make merry! Although holiday traditions ma Let’s make merry! Although holiday traditions may look different this year; we have an opportunity to get creative and share in new experiences. Like the new-to-me homemade marshmallow recipe, @thekirstyfiles and I have the pleasure of bringing to you in partnership with @pacific_place. We encourage you to invite a few pals to a zoom date, pop a bottle of bubbly, and create these delicious confections together. I promise they’re relatively fool proof (I pulled them off!) AND a sugar-high afternoon spent with friends (even virtually) will be sure to get you in the holiday spirit! Tune in to Pacific Place’s IGTV or YouTube to see the full tutorial, including my gaff when my marshmallow began moving into the “hard ball” territory (note: this recipe does require a candy thermometer and the ability to read it!). Cheers to making the most out of holiday 2020! #homemademarshmallows #pacificplaceseattle #craftingtogether
Ooooh...how I love a good shopping day with a frie Ooooh...how I love a good shopping day with a friend. The belly laughs, chit chat, and groans (as we tried on a number of jeans) provided the escape from reality that I needed. Sometimes you don’t realize just how much you miss something until you get to enjoy it again!

Other things I love? Soft luxury cashmere, designer denim that fits like a glove, and packable hats (yes, packable!). All can be found @willaseattle; a small, women-owned boutique located in the heart of the Queen Anne neighborhood in Seattle. Be sure to check out our stories as @thekirstyfiles and I share holiday-perfect gifts for your sister, mother, girlfriends...yourself! Lucky for Kirsty and I, our husbands also know the lovely owner, Liz (and she has our wishlists on file)!

Also very near and dear to my heart, Willa is the epitome of shopping local. The shelves are stocked with unique, small business designs; including many Seattle businesses. When you shop local, you not only support your community but also curate a look all your own!

Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for you Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for yourself, aka #stayathomestyle. Sure, 2020 may be the year of the sweatpant (combined with a sleeping bag-like coat, as seen here). And yes, a mask chain is this year’s hottest accessory. BUT I still take care to actually get dressed each day. And while lipstick may no longer be a part of my daily routine (I mean, was it ever??), it’s still important to be pulled together..if only for my own mental health. And even if no one else sees it but the grocery clerk. #whatmamaworemonday #sweatpantsseason
