Shopping With A Purpose

March 7, 2017

O Magazine Capsule Collection Dress for Success“Give Confidence Hope Style”

These words really resonate with me as I read about O, The Oprah Magazine’s limited edition capsule collection at Talbots that benefits one of my favorite charities, Dress for Success. Dress For Success is an international non-profit that empowers women to achieve economic independence by providing support, development tools, and professional attire to help women thrive in the workplace.

Especially because today we honor and support women’s contributions to our society and economy (today is International Women’s Day), I thought that this collaboration was particularly important to share.  With 30% of the net proceeds from the O capsule collection at Talbot’s going directly to empower women reentering the workforce, you can make a powerful contribution with your shopping dollars.  We all can understand the confidence a new look can inspire, and this seemingly small contribution can be a huge first step for many women returning to work and embarking on the journey to become self sufficient.

Now let’s talk style, because this collection has plenty to offer!  Designed in partnership with the Creative Director of O Magazine; the collection offers a fun, modern twist to classic styles.  Items include a cheerful, mixed print silk scar, a nautical-inspired knit vest, and chic, French-girl mules (all of these are on my wish list!).

And, most importantly, last year’s capsule collection helped over 20,000 women (after raising over $1 million dollars)!  This year we have the opportunity to help even more as the collection hit stores nationwide, including Bellevue Square, on February 21st.

Ways You Can Get Involved:

  • Shop the collection in-stores or online
  • Donate monetarily in-stores or online at tabots.com/dressforsuccess through April 2nd
  • Donate gently-used professional attire or volunteer your time at your local Dress for Success affiliate
The Oprah Magazine Collection for TalbotsIt is impossible for me to imagine “A Day Without a Woman” as many celebrate International Women’s Day…but that’s the point, right?  To all of you marching today, to all of your volunteering today, to all of you working today, to all of you parenting today; I am so proud of all of us.  Women supporting women is a very powerful thing.  Thank you for your support and for reading, shopping, and dreaming with me. ~Jenn

Layering Summer Staples for Spring

March 4, 2017

Layering a slip dress for springIs your spring wardrobe mocking you as it hangs in your closet?? Or have you already scored a couple of spring updates that you’re dying to wear?  Layering is a simple solution that allows you to don your spring clothes even if the weather isn’t agreeing with your outfit choices.
Turtleneck for SpringAccessorizing a Slip DressA couple of things to consider when layering:

  1. Avoid bulking items.  Instead choose light and form fitting pieces for your base layer.  For example, this turtleneck is a bit too clingy for my preference when worn alone; however, it’s perfect under this dress and sweaters.
  2. Consider your fabrics.  Opt for light fabrics in synthetic blends that glide easily over each other and your body.  Knits and cotton can cling to each other, you want to avoid this as it creates excess bulk and annoying adjustments.
  3. Contrast yet compliment.  Select patterns and necklines that are obviously different but also compliment one another.

A friendly reminder that today is the last day of the Shopbop ‘GOBIG17’ sale.  The entire site is up to 25% off until midnight (PST) tonight.  See my favorite sale picks here.

Hope you are enjoying a fantastic weekend!  Thanks for reading. ~Jenn

Sale Alert: Shopbop ‘GOBIG17’

March 1, 2017

Free People 'Soul Serene' BlouseYou know how I love a good sale?!  And the Shopbop sale never disappoints!  Mainly because it’s not a winter clearance (I, for one, am SO over winter!) but a percentage off their entire site (including sale and full-price items).  Use code “GOBIG17” to save up to 25% off…hurry, prices go up March 5th at 12:00 am PT.

Shopping a big site like Shopbop can be overwhelming.  I narrow my search by the following criteria:

Frame le crop mini bootcut undone hem

Frame ‘Le Crop Mini Bootcut’

Denim (always).  This spring I’m loving the retro vibe of straight, high-rise jeans.  I’m also totally onboard with undone and staggered hems, contrasting colors, and any kind of vintage detailing.  Distressing is still cool, but I’m seeing a lot without holes.

Young, Fabulous & Broke Velvet Pants

Young, Fabulous & Broke

Trend  I’m still rockin’ all of the velvet that was a major trend this fall and winter.  This luxe fabric, particularly in lighter colors such as dusty rose and silvery grey, can work for the warmer days of spring.  If an entire piece seems too much, try an accessory (like the shoes below!).  The texture and dimension will be sure to spruce up even the most simple of outfits!

Free People 'If You Only Knew' Dress

Free People

Brand  Searching by a designer or brand you enjoy is an easy way to refine your search.  Brands I search for include Rag & Bone, Rails, The Great, Frame, Jeffrey Campbell, and Free People (to name only a few).  In fact, I have this Free People dress in black and I love it so much, I have added the red to my shopping cart.  It’s very versatile; I’ve paired it with flat mules and a leather jacket as well as heeled sandals.  Note that I also own the blouse below in black (pictured above).

Jeffrey Campbell 'Perpetua' Mule

Jeffrey Campbell Mule

Accessories  This sale is an excellent opportunity to update your accessories for the new season.  A lighter color handbag, the new “it” shoe for the season, and a versatile belt are all on my wish list.

Below are a few other things in my shopping cart…

Rails Carter Button Down Shirt with StarsRails Chambray Shirt

The Great Ruffle TeeThe Great.

Vanessa Mooney Duster EarringsVanessa Mooney (these also come in black)

Rebecca Taylor Tiered Lace Mini DressRebecca Taylor

Quay Rose Tinted Genesis SunglassesQuay Sunglasses

Did you know when you purchase an item (or items) from my site, I receive a small commission from the sale?  You get inside sale information and great style picks, I get funding to keep my shopping habit alive…it’s a win/win!  All this to say, thank you for reading my blog and supporting me. ~Jenn

Completely unrelated note: I posted yesterday about sustainable style. More of the same here with a designer consignment find. Fashion recycling at it’s finest...(more) affordable and saving clothes from landfills. #winwin Not that Ulla would ever be sent to a landfill! #sustainablestyle #consignmentfinds
Instagram post 17842653562848622 You know what you’ll regret even more than a parking ticket?? Missing out on this jumpsuit at 20% off! •

Seriously, @amourvert gets me every time. I’m thrilled that sustainable style can also be incredibly chic! And this jumpsuit is so versatile. I’ve worn this out to celebrate a friend’s 50th @canlisrestaurant last month (only Seattle’s most dressy fine dining establishment)...yet dressed it down for work today paired with booties and a moto jacket. Get the most of your wardrobe by investing in well-made, sustainable pieces. And at 20%...til midnight!! #amourvert #getyourshopon #cybermonday #gifted
Instagram post 17868235957543724 Two words I strongly dislike: influencer and follower. Both have such odd connotations but are common social media terminology. Instead, I understand that this is a community. One in which I share, participate and learn...I’ve made missteps, shared frustrations, and celebrated victories. All this to say THANK YOU. For sticking with me! For your kind words of support (and joining me in outrage) as I struggled with @instagram “technical difficulties” that left me unable to post for a week. I’ve missed being able to like and comment more than I’ve missed sharing. And I’m returning more inspired to rejoin this community and appreciate this connection (however, tenuous it may be!). •

PS. This is a photo was taken a week ago after the girls’ piano recital, when I discovered I couldn’t post! #thanksinstagram #seattlemom #momofgirls
Instagram post 18114915724058918 Hey! I want to tell you all the story behind my favorite earrings. (Because who doesn’t love a good story...and this one is particularly compelling).

I bought my first pair of @dearsurvivor earrings this past summer @queenanneframe (of course). Made from recycled leather and responsibly sourced 14k gold fill, they’re light weight in addition to an ultra chic design and sustainable production. They just seem to go with everything! Well, the up-cycled cork earrings pictured are my 5th pair, not including the countless pairs I have gifted.

•
It was only after my last purchase that I learned, in addition to a portion of proceeds being donated to help support survivors of sex trafficking, these earrings are produced right here in Seattle by @refugeesarts. Small accessories can have a big impact...and this is proof! @dearsurvivor earrings are made uber locally and help refugee women support their families as they transition to life in the United States. Seriously, I could not love these gorgeous earrings more! #dearsurvivor #fashionforgood #sustainablestyle
Instagram post 17882494972459777 Think outside the box when dressing for all of those holiday soirées! I like to add a statement piece to spruce up my everyday wardrobe workhorses. And this look can easily take you from “desk to drinks” with a simple shoe and accessory change! In fact, I wore the sneaker look to a casual, shopping party and plan to trade in the heels for a date night look later this week. •
•
Speaking of outside the box, have you ever considered a wardrobe rental service for your holiday dressing? I was recently impressed when I discovered Seattle-based @armoire.style - an online styling and rental service. Aside from Armoire’s wide selection of designer and on-trend pieces that you can easily swap out as much as you please for your monthly rental fee, the sustainability aspect of renting really appeals to me! Especially for special occasion. Rather than buying a dress that you’ll rarely wear (if ever more than once), you can rent fun pieces for all of your holiday parties! AND, if you’re in the Seattle area, you can now try on pieces IRL in one of their two boutiques. Or, work with an online stylist to find your perfect statement party piece! #collaboration #armoirestyle #partyready
Instagram post 18112847584059391 Wearing less black and grey this season. What are your style goals this time of year? I know this may seem like a small thing, what colors you’re wearing. But I truly think that how you dress can affect your mood and confidence. It’s getting dark earlier, the temperatures are chilly...I need a colorful boost. #styletheeveryday #colorfulcloset
Instagram post 17901815452389655 I have two favorite veterans...but many others to thank as well.
•

It’s impossible to truly understand the sacrifice these men, women AND their families make in an effort to preserve our way of life here in the United States. My husband was deployed for the first 16 months of our marriage. I will always remember the awe, respect, and gratitude I felt towards the young soldiers he led and the many families and children left to live with the absence of their parents or spouse...their loved ones. (I also felt very lonely, worried, and frightened during this period of our life). And I still think of the opportunities John would have had to sacrifice had he not returned home as he did. Many young people don’t come home to raise families and have full lives. I’m so proud of my veteran and our service. And very grateful that we get to raise our family and grow old together in a country where we can be free. THANK YOU to all veterans and their families. I think of you many days throughout the year. #hugavet #thankyouveterans 🇺🇸
