Friday Trend Report: Attention to Detail

October 26, 2018

What makes personal style?

Whether you care to admit it or not, we all have style.  And even if you don’t buy into the latest trends or invest a lot in your wardrobe, the way you dress reflects your personality and the pieces you choose to put on each day is often your first introduction.  So why not put on clothes as special and unique as you are?

Adding interesting pieces to your everyday outfits is a great way to infuse your wardrobe with personality.  The addition of a stand-out shoe, an embroidered jacket, or even somethings as simple as unique button or ribbon detailing, can make an otherwise simple outfit your own.  And you don’t have to spend a lot, to make a statement.  For example, I have plans to add a grosgrain ribbon to a pair of jeans in an effort to replicate the pants I highlight below.

When shopping, I’m looking for a standout piece that will compliment the items I already wear day in and day out.  I’m a jeans and tee kinda gal (now sweater with the onset of fall), so layers or accessories that still allow me to dress within my comfort zone is key.  Lately I’ve been shopping some consignment and vintage stores to add the unique je ne sais quoi that I’m trying to achieve.  I’m either investing in stand-out, high-end pieces that I wouldn’t be able to justify at their full-retail price tag or seeking one-of-a-kind, treasures from the past that will look modern when paired with my current wardrobe.

Embroidered Bomber Jacket{outfit details} jacket: AS65 (found at MB Finds designer consignment) | sweater: 360 Cashmere | pants: Frame (also from MB Finds) | sneakers: Golden Goose (MB) | sunnies: Barton Perreira (found at Eye Eye) | bag: Lucky Brand (vintage)

Other stand-out pieces:

As always, thank you for reading.  Happy Friday!  ~Jenn

Double Date Night in Seattle

October 25, 2018

Henry's Tavern Seattle

Shuffle Board Henry's Tavern Seattle

I frequently get asked about where to eat in Seattle.  And truth-be-told, often times I’m stumped.  While I do get out (admittedly, it’s often a “work” event); it can be a challenge to find some place, especially if you are going as a group, arranging sitters, coordinating schedules, etc.  And with the Seattle food scene, reservations can be required weeks in advance.  I mean, who has time for that??

This weekend, Kirsty and I finally made plans for a long-overdue couples night out…sans kids.  And, after promising to have our respective middle school-age babysitters home before 10:00, we agreed that a visit to Henry’s Tavern was the perfect double date destination.  A casual evening filled with waffle fries and shuffle board was just what these four small business owning, soccer coaching, field trip chaperoning, style blogging parents were looking for.

Night Out Seattle

Fried Chicken Sandwich Henry's Tavern

I ordered off the “special menu” recommended by our waitress – a fried chicken sandwich topped with jalapeños and drizzled with honey.  John was impressed by the variety of beers on tap, and Nick ordered the margarita special.  And lucky for us, the chili ladened waffle fries arrived just in time to defuse the intensity of our shuffle board game (for what we lack in skill, we make-up for in competitive spirit).

Cheers to double date night!  It’s not too late to hire that sitter and visit one of Henry’s Tavern’s 3 Seattle locations this weekend.  When you tell them that Jenn and Kirsty sent you, you’ll receive your second appetizer for free (buy one, get one appetizer is good thru October 31st with code “WHATJEN”).  We recommend the waffle fries!

Thanks for reading! ~Jenn (John, Kirsty and Nick too)

Double Date Night SeattleThank you to Henry’s Tavern for partnering on this post.

Seattle “Seen”

October 10, 2018

Seattle Eye Clinic Eye Eye

Independent Designer Eyewear Eye EyeLast month I got an exam at Seattle’s boutique eye clinic and optical shop, Eye Eye.  Needless-to-say, it had been awhile.  And, while checking my vision is important, particularly as I am getting…ahem…older; I was thrilled to browse Eye Eye’s amazing selection of beautifully curated eye glasses, including independent designers frames as well as a vintage dead stock.

First up: a comprehensive exam with Dr. Pentecost.  I learned that, because I am “fortunate” to be near-sighted, I am still able to read a menu at a normal distance.  Did you know that the flexibility of the eye’s lens begins to degenerate after age 40; often resulting in far-sightedness (this leads to you having to hold the menu away from you to read it)?  Because I am already challenged seeing at a distance, my eye can still flex to see things up close…for now (this is the very laymen’s explanation, the doctor provided much more scientific detail).

Seattle Eye Eye FramesNext up, the fun part!  Decisions, decisions.  I started with at least 8 frames and was assisted by nearly the entire Eye Eye team in narrowing down my choices.  There were so many fashion-forward, classic, colorful, and even vintage frames to choose from!  While most shops offer 5 brands, Eye Eye carries 27 independent designers, so you are sure to find something unique to your aesthetic – all while supporting small designers (and small business).

I do love the “nerd-chic” look of a dark plastic frame, but this year I’m digging the retro, aviator-inspired trend.  (As evident by my final selection below).  And because Eye Eye has an in-house lab, my frames were turned around and expertly fitted within days of my selection.  The only downside?  Returning to Eye Eye’s beautiful store and being tempted by more frames and sunglasses too!  I did go home with these sunnies – to note, Eye Eye can add your prescription to sunglasses and sportswear (think goggles) as well.

Eye Eye Prescription Sunglassessunglasses: Barton Perreira

I’m sending the hubs in next!  The entire team are knowledgeable experts.  I worked with Milli; she really knows her stuff and can help expertly guide you based both on your preference and face shape.

And, would you believe that Kirsty and I did not go shopping together?  Unsurprisingly, we choose almost the identical frame without sharing our choices in advance!

Seattle Style Bloggers Eye Eyeeyeglasses: Moscot

Thank you for reading!  And happy Wednesday.  ~Jenn

A special thank you to Eye Eye for gifting my eyewear in exchange for my honest review of their services.

Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted t Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted the new year feeling inspired with a renewed intention for my account; to share with you the goodies I love, wear, try. Unfiltered and honest. That’s what I’m here for. But then...2021 arrived feeling much like her older sister, 2020. Instead, I’ve avoided a lot of social media; choosing to tune into various news outlets and into my family. So, HERE WE ARE. A post proving that I got dressed yesterday, wearing some of my new favorites (these @flamingosshoes white boots!) and steady stand-bys (year 2 wearing this @notmondaymercantile beanie on repeat). I took the kids out after school to run a couple of errands and connect with a business I love to support; we made plans for a spring share. Man, it felt good to get out! And now, I’m posting early before I’ve read the morning news. So, it’s happened.

Please stay safe, remain respectful, and true to yourself. Social media is a beautiful way to connect, create, and inspire...but can also be a dangerous rabbit hole of misinformation and an opportunity for people to behave in a way they ordinarily wouldn’t in person. Off my soap box. Have a lovely Friday!#wordsfrommyheart #realoutfitgram #flamingosshoes #whiteboots #notmondaymoments
Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you all but enjoyed a nice long break. Heading back home after some snow time and I’m feeling re-energized (for now). Isn’t it funny how a change in the calendar can make you feel different? Are you a “new year, new you” kinda gal or more indifferent? I do like a good reset. Even though we’ll be doing more of the same early this year, I’m feeling more optimistic. For now. Cheers to 2021!

Also, posted in stories a nearly identical photo of us from last January at the top of @schweitzer_mountain. While the photos look the same, it’s fun to think that we now are Sandpoint homeowners! A positive outcome of 2020. #newyearonthemountain #snowbest #schweitzermountain #skifamily
Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all the boxes this year. Thinking of everyone not able to spend time with loved ones this year. I’m so grateful for our little family but really missing my parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, my in-laws. Over a year seems far too long to be apart; but we all need to continue to be safe. It matters. #christmassweater #christmas2020 #staysafestayhome #vintagesweater
Let’s make merry! Although holiday traditions ma Let’s make merry! Although holiday traditions may look different this year; we have an opportunity to get creative and share in new experiences. Like the new-to-me homemade marshmallow recipe, @thekirstyfiles and I have the pleasure of bringing to you in partnership with @pacific_place. We encourage you to invite a few pals to a zoom date, pop a bottle of bubbly, and create these delicious confections together. I promise they’re relatively fool proof (I pulled them off!) AND a sugar-high afternoon spent with friends (even virtually) will be sure to get you in the holiday spirit! Tune in to Pacific Place’s IGTV or YouTube to see the full tutorial, including my gaff when my marshmallow began moving into the “hard ball” territory (note: this recipe does require a candy thermometer and the ability to read it!). Cheers to making the most out of holiday 2020! #homemademarshmallows #pacificplaceseattle #craftingtogether
Ooooh...how I love a good shopping day with a frie Ooooh...how I love a good shopping day with a friend. The belly laughs, chit chat, and groans (as we tried on a number of jeans) provided the escape from reality that I needed. Sometimes you don’t realize just how much you miss something until you get to enjoy it again!

Other things I love? Soft luxury cashmere, designer denim that fits like a glove, and packable hats (yes, packable!). All can be found @willaseattle; a small, women-owned boutique located in the heart of the Queen Anne neighborhood in Seattle. Be sure to check out our stories as @thekirstyfiles and I share holiday-perfect gifts for your sister, mother, girlfriends...yourself! Lucky for Kirsty and I, our husbands also know the lovely owner, Liz (and she has our wishlists on file)!

Also very near and dear to my heart, Willa is the epitome of shopping local. The shelves are stocked with unique, small business designs; including many Seattle businesses. When you shop local, you not only support your community but also curate a look all your own!

Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for you Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for yourself, aka #stayathomestyle. Sure, 2020 may be the year of the sweatpant (combined with a sleeping bag-like coat, as seen here). And yes, a mask chain is this year’s hottest accessory. BUT I still take care to actually get dressed each day. And while lipstick may no longer be a part of my daily routine (I mean, was it ever??), it’s still important to be pulled together..if only for my own mental health. And even if no one else sees it but the grocery clerk. #whatmamaworemonday #sweatpantsseason

On the eve of Black Friday sales bonanza, I hope t On the eve of Black Friday sales bonanza, I hope to inspire, remind, urge, and even beg you to ignore all of the crazy cyber sales that have been creeping into your inbox for the past week and instead SHOP SMALL this holiday season. Yes, perhaps it’s less convenient and even less of a “deal” but this pandemic is putting an even greater strain on the small and local businesses that are the absolute life blood of our communities. And, in addition to supporting an entrepreneur and neighbor, you’ll likely find more creative, individual, and unique gifts for your loved ones by shopping a small business.
