There’s Always a Backstory

January 29, 2019

Serpentine Layered NecklacesSerpentine Seattle JewelrySeattle Made Serpentine JewelryI love the “story behind the story.”  Because there always is one, isn’t there?

Earlier this week, I shared Serpentine Jewelry’s mission to create “everyday fine jewelry” that can be worn from carpool to cocktails.  And, while I’m loving their organic collection of mix n’ match luxury pieces, I’m even more enamored with the two women behind this beautiful jewelry line.  Their journey and personal story epitomize what it is to be a creative woman, a working mother, and a collaborative friend.

Jill and Sally are friends and neighbors.  They began designing jewelry nearly 5 years ago at a time when they were both at a personal crossroads.  At first, they sought out unique beads and jewels in local bead stores and on Etsy but, after adventuring to the Tucson gem show, they soon began buying rare, one-of-a-kind natural stones and having them bezel set in uncut diamonds.  Additionally, they are now designing unique charms to hang as pendants or to string on their signature stackable bracelets.

Jill and Sally’s rapport with each other is genuine and their enthusiasm is infectious.  Our time spent together was peppered with deep belly laughs, and we have a shared appreciation for accessorizing and wearing items you love on the daily.  Most often, these two can be found transporting jewels (and brews) between their two homes and jewelry making has been know to be a family affair.  With 4 teenage boys between them, they have many funny stories about raising kids while running a growing business (including a time that the boys mixed-up paired earrings while Jill was retrieving beer from Sally’s fridge across the street!).

A little known fact?  Their name was initially inspired by combining the first letters of Jill and Sally’s sons’ names.  And while “J.A.D.E” didn’t entirely resonate, Serpentine (a form of Jade) was a perfect match.  Just like the partnership they’ve formed; balancing creative and business responsibilities between these two friends.

Seattle Mom What Jenn WoreSeattle Mom Style BlogSerpentine Fine JewelryMy story behind the story?  Well, it includes these two beauties (and their older brother, who refused to play dress-up).  And while I may ultimately look put together at events or in photos on this blog, preparation often times looks a lot like this.  I have two spies watching my every move and mimicking my behavior.  Their eagerness to try on high heels and wear red lipstick is both flattering and disconcerting (especially for my husband).  Being a role model to these two humans is my most humbling, frustrating and rewarding work.

As a working parent, I admire Jill and Sally’s creativity and determination to create a brand and grow a business.  All the meanwhile, designing a life while raising children.  Women business owners and moms truly are super heroes!

You can find these Serpentine jewels on the dedicated “What Jenn Wore” page on their site.Future entrepreneurs?  Designers?  Moms?  I hope so.  As witnessed by meeting the women behind Serpentine, any and all is possible.  Thank you Jill and Sally for allowing me to share your story, in addition to Serpentine’s beautiful jewels.

And thank you for reading.  If you are local to Seattle, I would absolutely love to see you at Serpentine’s Trunk Show on Saturday, February 9th at La Ree boutique in Bellevue. ~Jenn

Carpool Duty Sparkle

January 27, 2019

Seattle Mom Blog Serpentine JewelrySerpentine Jewelry PendantsSeattle Mom BloggerI’ve been working from home more and, as always, I spend a lot of time with my kids as their primary caretaker.  Mostly this is a job that I relish and I prioritize being available for school volunteering opportunities, after-school carpooling, and dinner prep.  One downside?  My nicer things tend to remain in my closet during my daily routine.  As such, I’m trying to be mindful of the pieces that I’m adding to my wardrobe and being more (gulp) realistic with regards to cost per wear.  And while I am definitely a person that subscribes to the belief that you should wear your expensive perfume daily and eat off of your fine china; wearing “dry clean only” clothes while on the school playground seems a bit impractical (not to mention expensive!).

When I recently was introduced to Serpentine Jewelry, I immediately fell in love with their “everyday luxury” fine jewelry.  Serpentine’s collection of mix-and-match chains and pendants, earrings, and beaded bracelets can be worn for most any occasion.  Using organic stones set in raw diamonds, the sparkle is subtle yet statement making. Everyday wear that can withstand the test of motherhood.

And I love the collection element of their designs.  Purchase a chain with an amazing diamond clasp and add pendants and charms as you build your wardrobe.  Switch them out depending on the occasion or wear them all together (always my preference).  Or, start with one beaded bracelet complete with a statement bead, hamsa or evil eye then add another…and another.

Seattle Mom of GirlsSerpentine Beaded BraceletsSerpentine Raw Diamond Set PendantSerpentine Fine JewelryMost importantly, I treasure knowing the story behind the artists crafting this beautiful line.  I can’t wait to share with you more about how Jill and Sally (two Seattle friends) started Serpentine and how they have built this business together.  Teaser alert: they are just as beautiful and unique as the stones they use to craft their jewelry.  Plus I love a good buddy story – they are best friends and neighbors as well!

Check back in on Wednesday as I share a second, dressier look styling these gorgeous jewels.  From “carpool to cocktails”…I’ll be trading my clogs for heels for a kid-free night out!  And, I’ll be telling more of Jill and Sally’s story.  I was lucky enough to interview them earlier this month; these are two fun gals you would enjoy getting to know over a cup of coffee (or a cocktail!).  And, as if you need more convincing, mark your calendars for Saturday, February 9th.  If you are in the Seattle-area, Serpentine is hosting a trunk show at La Ree Boutique in Bellevue.  Come try on jewels and meet these lovely ladies for yourself!

I am wearing the “Curb Chain” paired with geode and starburst pendants.  Also pave earrings and my bracelets found here, here, and here.

Seattle Mom Serpentine JewelryTaking pictures with kids is tough…but so rewarding!  Basically like parenting.  The girls thoroughly enjoyed playing dress-up and modeling.  I did too.  Mostly.

Thank you for reading.  Come back Wednesday for a second look and more about the creative forces behind Serpentine! ~Jenn

Friday Trend Report: It’s Electric!

January 11, 2019

Electric Blue SweaterHow to wear bright colorsI’m lovin’ the return of bright, bold primary colors this winter.  A pop of color does wonders for cheering up your outfits and, I would be the first to argue, your mood.  Cherry red, bright, Kelly green, sunshine yellow, and electric, royal blue are all gracing store racks this season.  And, perfectly paired with all of those dark neutrals (like black and grey), you are sure to stand out in a crowd.

Particularly as a fair-skinned, blonde, these brights interject color and brighten my complexion.  This time of year in particular, I find that dark neutrals (like black) tend to be too much of a contrast against my sun-deprived skin.  Meanwhile lighter neutrals, like camel or light grey, can wash me out.  In addition to brightening your outfit, choose a primary color that compliments your coloring.  A sweater is definitely an easy option but skirts, dresses, and even shoes are a great way to interject some color into your winter wardrobe!

Other electric blue pieces I’m lovin’:

Escape to Portlandia

January 9, 2019

Portland, Oregon Hotel LuciaIf you are unfamiliar with the Pacific Northwest, you may not know that Seattle has a hip and proudly quirky neighbor to the south. Just a mere three-hour road trip down Interstate 5, once you cross the Columbia river, you will find yourself in Portland, Oregon. Recently made famous for it’s hipster portrayal in the HBO series “Portlandia,” Portland is equally well-known for it’s numerous bridges, tax-free shopping, and deliciously eclectic food scene.

An easy trek via Bolt Bus (if you haven’t tried, I highly recommend), I recently spent a quick 24-hour trip catching-up with a good friend. We did our last minute holiday shopping, ate at Portland’s famous food trucks, and finished the evening with some late night karaoke. To top it all off, we enjoyed our one night out at the stylish Hotel Lucia, conveniently located central to just-about-anything, in downtown Portland.

In an effort to offer inspiration for your next trip to the Rose City, I’m sharing with you our 24-hour itinerary.

After disembarking from the bus, our first stop was for food. We had brunch at a Portland institution, Besaw’s. Unable to decide, we shared the seasonal specials: butternut squash French toast and a vegetable hash. And, of course, their specialty cocktail: bubbles with pear and ginger compote.

With belly’s full, next we visited Foot Bar for some well-deserved pampering. A foot massage was the perfect solution – we were still able to chat and catch-up, yet enjoyed the relaxing and reflexology benefits of the massage. A pedicure is an option at Foot Bar, however, due to the rain and wind, we choose to forgo the polish.

Next we wandered thru the Pearl District, a former warehouse area converted into beautiful store fronts and a variety of restaurants.  While a seemingly “safe choice,” we started at Anthropologie.  Yet, the Portland Anthro is like none you have ever seen – it’s two floors, complete with home furnishings, and many of the items are uniquely curated for this location.  And, well…they were having a 30% off sale, plus the aforementioned lack of sales tax (which saves Seattlites 10%)!  I bought this terrific plaid jacket.  From there we headed to an absolute must stop, the famous Powell’s Books.  Powell’s is an independent bookstore that has been in this location, off of Burnside, since 1971.  Yes, actual shelves of real books with pages that turn!  It is a paradise for the reading enthusiast with a wide-selection books, including rare and out-of-print.

Hotel Lucia Portland, OregonHotel Lucia Portland, Oregon

Post-shopping sesh, we checked-in to the beautiful Hotel Lucia.  Immediately we were in awe of the finely curated selection of art displayed in their lobby.  The hotel hosts the largest selection of David Humme Kennerly’s black and white photography, which graces the walls of the lobby, halls, and rooms.  Kennerly is a Portland native, most notably recognized for his historical photography – examples of his subjects adorn the walls of the hotel including Castro smoking a cigar and George H.W. Bush beside George W. Bush, but also many lifestyle shots reflective of Kennerly’s 50+ year career.  In addition to stunning photos, around every corner of Hotel Lucia, there are amazing paintings and sculptures, all enhanced by the decor of rich navy and jewel tones mixed with gold.  We also just so happened to time our arrival perfectly with the hotel’s afternoon craft beer hour, so we lingered in the lobby longer, enjoying Portland-brewed suds (Portland is also the #1 city for craft beer).

In addition to a long-overdue visit to catch-up with my bestie, we also choose this weekend (the third in December) because it coincided with the Portland Night Market.  This is a 3-day event featuring local artists, vendors, and makers selling their wares.  Goods varied from craft bitters, ceramics, and jewelry to scrunchies (which I bought for my daughters), cookies, and paper goods.  The market was a total scene (and packed), complete with food carts and beer garden.  We sampled a hybrid southern/asian fusion of fried chicken on steamed buns by Boke Bowl followed by a late-night churro sundae at Churros Locos.

Portland, Oregon Weekend Getaway

No trip to Portland would be complete without a trip to the Voicebox.  Little known fact, I love karaoke.  The only person I know who loves it more, is my best friend.  Now, this isn’t a “get up in front of a bar full of strangers” kind of performance, but rather a private room complete with bar service.  You get to choose all your favorite songs without sacrificing your ego in front of strangers.  It’s the perfect finale to a night out on the town…we didn’t even close the place down when we left at 1:30!

The following morning, we squeezed in a barre class at Barre 3 (which was a miracle, given our late night out!).  Barre 3 combines yoga, pilates, and ballet, and just so happens to have been started and still headquartered in Portland.  While we missed being taught by Sadie (the inspiring woman that started this fitness empire), we did enjoy a tough workout and the studio is conveniently located within the NW area of town, an easy walk from our hotel.

Post workout, we stumbled into Lovejoy Bakery. After our barre class, an oat milk latte and avocado toast was the perfect start to our Saturday. Their pastries looked amazing as well, but the aforementioned churros from the night before were still fresh on my mind.  Then, after a quick freshening-up back at the hotel, it was back on the Bolt Bus for me as I headed home to spend the remainder of the weekend with my family.  The timing could not have been better – a Friday night spent in Portland was a perfect break, a quick getaway before returning to reality back home in Seattle.David Humme Kennerly Collection Hotel Lucia

Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted t Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted the new year feeling inspired with a renewed intention for my account; to share with you the goodies I love, wear, try. Unfiltered and honest. That’s what I’m here for. But then...2021 arrived feeling much like her older sister, 2020. Instead, I’ve avoided a lot of social media; choosing to tune into various news outlets and into my family. So, HERE WE ARE. A post proving that I got dressed yesterday, wearing some of my new favorites (these @flamingosshoes white boots!) and steady stand-bys (year 2 wearing this @notmondaymercantile beanie on repeat). I took the kids out after school to run a couple of errands and connect with a business I love to support; we made plans for a spring share. Man, it felt good to get out! And now, I’m posting early before I’ve read the morning news. So, it’s happened.

Please stay safe, remain respectful, and true to yourself. Social media is a beautiful way to connect, create, and inspire...but can also be a dangerous rabbit hole of misinformation and an opportunity for people to behave in a way they ordinarily wouldn’t in person. Off my soap box. Have a lovely Friday!#wordsfrommyheart #realoutfitgram #flamingosshoes #whiteboots #notmondaymoments
Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you all but enjoyed a nice long break. Heading back home after some snow time and I’m feeling re-energized (for now). Isn’t it funny how a change in the calendar can make you feel different? Are you a “new year, new you” kinda gal or more indifferent? I do like a good reset. Even though we’ll be doing more of the same early this year, I’m feeling more optimistic. For now. Cheers to 2021!

Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all the boxes this year. Thinking of everyone not able to spend time with loved ones this year. I’m so grateful for our little family but really missing my parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, my in-laws. Over a year seems far too long to be apart; but we all need to continue to be safe. It matters. #christmassweater #christmas2020 #staysafestayhome #vintagesweater

Like the new-to-me homemade marshmallow recipe, @thekirstyfiles and I have the pleasure of bringing to you in partnership with @pacific_place. We encourage you to invite a few pals to a zoom date, pop a bottle of bubbly, and create these delicious confections together. I promise they’re relatively fool proof (I pulled them off!) AND a sugar-high afternoon spent with friends (even virtually) will be sure to get you in the holiday spirit! Tune in to Pacific Place’s IGTV or YouTube to see the full tutorial, including my gaff when my marshmallow began moving into the “hard ball” territory (note: this recipe does require a candy thermometer and the ability to read it!). The belly laughs, chit chat, and groans (as we tried on a number of jeans) provided the escape from reality that I needed. Other things I love? Soft luxury cashmere, designer denim that fits like a glove, and packable hats (yes, packable!). Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for you Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for yourself, aka #stayathomestyle. Sure, 2020 may be the year of the sweatpant (combined with a sleeping bag-like coat, as seen here). And yes, a mask chain is this year’s hottest accessory. BUT I still take care to actually get dressed each day. And while lipstick may no longer be a part of my daily routine (I mean, was it ever??), it’s still important to be pulled together..if only for my own mental health. And even if no one else sees it but the grocery clerk. #whatmamaworemonday #sweatpantsseason
