Secrets for Scoring Deals on Designer Duds

February 15, 2017

Isabel Marant Etoile Fimo Striped Jacket

Ever curious how mere mortals can afford designer labels?  As a savvy online shopper, I am willing to share my secrets.  And it’s all in the hunt!   Isabel Marant Etoile Striped Fimo Jacket

This Isabel Marant Etoille jacket is an excellent example of the search required to pay less for the designer duds you may desire.  I initially saw a jacket in this stripe design while on vacation this summer; it was in the cutest little boutique in Laguna Beach.  I took a picture on my phone and then began my search in ernest.  Given that it was a fall item, I had to wait…patiently.  I was reminded of this gem around the holidays and time was finally on my side!  Having another Isabel Marant jacket, I knew my size (which can be tricky with differing European sizing).  Especially when hunting sales and deal sites, there may be limited sizes available and you always want to check the return policy (you most definitely do not want to be stuck with a “deal” that you cannot return!)

Isabel Marant Etoile Fimo Striped JacketIsabel Marant Etoile Lace Inset BlouseA few of my favorite “go-to” sites for scoring major deals on designer pieces include the following:

  • Nordstrom Rack
  • The RealReal (preowned designer goods)
  • The Outnet
  • Saks Off Fifth
  • Neiman Marcus Last Call
  • Bluefly
  • Barney’s Warehouse.

The trick is to know what you are looking for before searching.  Especially when shopping online, the selection can be overwhelming.  Or, if combing the racks, know the brands that you are interested in.  I scored this Isabel Marant Etoile top at Nordstrom Rack and tried on these Rachel Comey booties in store but waited until they were finally greatly reduced before pulling the trigger.

How-To: Holiday Shop for Cyber Deals Online

November 22, 2016

Online shopping black friday salesIt’s the time of year to start preparing for the online deals that have already started to crop up on the Internet.  ‘Black Friday’ has seemed to have crept into Thanksgiving and even earlier this week! And, of course, there’s ‘Cyber Monday’ now too.  Rather than get distracted by all of the chatter online, it’s important to prepare in advance…your wallet and shopping list will benefit! Below are some simple tips to keep your online shopping on track:

  1. Make your list and check it twice. It’s so easy to overspend when your purchase is simply a click away! Instead, take inventory of what you may need (think: holiday parties, winter activities, home decor, and even travel plans!). Make your gift list and set a budget. Family, friends, teachers, hostess gifts, your hair stylist, garbage collectors, mailmen, and more!
  2. Subscribe to mailing lists to ensure that you are receiving retailers’ sale notifications in advance.
  3. Search for promo codes prior to clicking the “purchase” button. Coupon Cabin, Retail-Me-Not, Deals Plus, and even Groupon are all great options.
  4. Ask your preferred retailers to price match, if you find a product for less elsewhere. They want your business and will likely agree.
  5. Think outside of the box when making your gift lists.  Consider experiences such as travel, dining, classes, and other adventures.  Subscription boxes are also a fun idea and there are options for everyone on your list (beauty, wine clubs, fitness, cigars, even maple syrup!)

Shopping Cyber Week Deals

Check back in later this week because I’ll be sharing deals from some of my favorite sites.  I’m also preparing gift lists to help get your Christmas shopping wrapped up in time for the holiday!

Thanks for reading! ~Jenn

How To: Organize Your Closet for the New Season

October 24, 2016

Wardrobe Organization

I spend a lot of time organizing closets this time of year, including my own! The change in season is an excellent time to both organize your space and take stock of what you may need to augment your fall wardrobe.  Below I’ve included my tried-and-true recipe for saving time getting dressed each morning (and enjoying what you are wearing!):

Store all out-of-season items. Make sure everything is properly cleaned before storage (stains can linger and moths favor items that have come in contact with your skin).  I prefer canvas storage bags to plastic because they allow your fabrics to breathe. Be sure to stow in a dry and dark place (water and light can damage your clothing). I store shoes in boxes; making sure that they are clean and dry prior to storage.

Be critical.  Try everything on that you have not worn in the past 6 months. Aside from obvious reasons (such as season or pregnancy), question why an item has not been worn. And, it’s ok to let things go. Just because you used to love wearing an item, or because you have never worn an item, doesn’t mean that it belongs in your closet.

Everything remaining in your wardrobe should bring you joy.

Recycle. Items that you “might wear one day” can be turned into cash by selling at your local consignment store.  If you are in Seattle, I recommend Take 2 Consignment or Sell Your Sole (for your designer pieces). There are also plenty of online consignment options available as well, including Poshmark and Thread Up, or The RealReal for designer items.

Shoe Closet

Group like items together. For example, long sleeve blouses, short sleeve blouses, then camisoles. I also prefer to organize by color within a category (ex. long sleeve blouses, light to dark). Blouses, trousers, skirts, dresses, and jackets should be hung. Sweaters and denim should be folded and stacked (no more than 3 to 4 items per stack, for accessibility). I prefer to fold my t-shirts and store in a drawer but this is personal preference (and depends on how much hanging space you have). Shoes should be placed on shelves where they are visible. A trick for getting more shoes on a shelf is to place shoes opposite directions (toe to heel).

Take advantage of the ‘prime real estate’ in your closet.  The most visible and easy to access areas in your wardrobe should be reserved for the clothes you wear most often.  Getting dressed each morning is easier when you can readily find what items you have in your closet.  And don’t cram too much onto your racks; instead give clothes space to breathe and you can better see what you have.  I also recommend using a consistent hanger; it’s less distracting to the eye.  My favorite hangers are these slim velvet hangers because they save space and are easier on your clothes.

Styled WardrobeHope you have found these tips and tricks helpful.  What do you do to keep organized? How do you transition your wardrobe for a new season? I’m always looking for process improvements!

Anniversary Sale: Shopping Prep

July 12, 2016

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2016It’s nearly that time of year again…the annual sale shopping event of the year, THE Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.  This sale is a great opportunity to stock-up on fall basics (yes, fall) at discounted prices.  I’m always interested in Nordstrom’s amazing selection of boots, designer denim, sweaters, and coats (yes, really…fall).  I also use this opportunity to refresh my undergarments and activewear.  Additionally, you can also score select (and limited) designer pieces, but only if you shop early.  For a small sampling of the sale offerings, check out the women’s catalog and men’s catalog.

In preparation for a shopping trip (whether it be in advance of this sale, back-to-school, or a shopping destination), you can avoid overspending and feeling overwhelmed by preparing in advance.  Yes, successful shopping requires preparation.  With this in mind, here’s your homework:

  1. Starting in your closet, take inventory of what you have.
  2. Make a list of things you need (this includes wardrobe “holes” or items you may need to compliment existing pieces in your wardrobe).
  3. Check the condition of stored items (for example, fall boots and winter coats), and note any replacements.
  4. Create a “wish list” – this could include “looks” you’ve seen on others or pieces that you have coveted in the past.  You may find a similar item on sale.  I always advocate for leaving a little room in your budget for the unexpected piece that brings you joy.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Shopping

Check back in in the coming days as I will continue to post my favorite sale picks, fall styling trends, and more sale shopping tips.  Also, did you know that if you shop through my links, I get a small percentage of your purchase?  You get styling tips and picks from a professional stylist, and I receive a small commission…a win/win.  Thank you and stay tuned! ~Jenn

Office Appropriate Summer Styles

June 3, 2016

What to Wear to Work in the SummerThe sun is shinning and the temperatures are finally warm enough to go without a jacket…yet you’re stuck in the arctic, air-conditioned office.  Yep, most of us still have to work during the summer months.  Until you strike it rich (or retire), I’ve got you covered for work appropriate summer styles (no pun intended).

Sleeveless Blouse for the Office

The golden rule for showing off your summer bronzed skin at work is to be subtle (read: appropriate) and choose just one area to highlight.  For example, love your toned shoulders?  A sleeveless blouse is perfectly acceptable when paired with cigarette pants and pumps.  Or would you rather free your legs from the constraints of hosiery?  Then cover-up up top with a summer-weight blazer or long-sleeve blouse.

Work Appropriate Skirtsphoto credit

I believe that open-toe shoes can be appropriate for work (this all depends, of course, on your office dress code).  Again, keep the look professional.  The flip flops or espadrilles that you live in all weekend shouldn’t see the florescent lights of the office.  However, a peep toe or polished sandal when paired with a pencil skirt or ankle-grazing pant is perfectly professional for most offices.

I greeted the new year feeling inspired with a renewed intention for my account; to share with you the goodies I love, wear, try. Unfiltered and honest. That’s what I’m here for. But then...2021 arrived feeling much like her older sister, 2020. Instead, I’ve avoided a lot of social media; choosing to tune into various news outlets and into my family. So, HERE WE ARE. A post proving that I got dressed yesterday, wearing some of my new favorites (these @flamingosshoes white boots!) and steady stand-bys (year 2 wearing this @notmondaymercantile beanie on repeat). I took the kids out after school to run a couple of errands and connect with a business I love to support; we made plans for a spring share. Man, it felt good to get out! And now, I’m posting early before I’ve read the morning news. So, it’s happened.

Please stay safe, remain respectful, and true to yourself. Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you all but enjoyed a nice long break. Heading back home after some snow time and I’m feeling re-energized (for now). Isn’t it funny how a change in the calendar can make you feel different? Are you a “new year, new you” kinda gal or more indifferent? I do like a good reset. Even though we’ll be doing more of the same early this year, I’m feeling more optimistic. For now. Cheers to 2021!

AND a sugar-high afternoon spent with friends (even virtually) will be sure to get you in the holiday spirit! Tune in to Pacific Place’s IGTV or YouTube to see the full tutorial, including my gaff when my marshmallow began moving into the “hard ball” territory (note: this recipe does require a candy thermometer and the ability to read it!). Other things I love? Soft luxury cashmere, designer denim that fits like a glove, and packable hats (yes, packable!).
