How-To Style a Family Photo Shoot

June 29, 2018

Seattle Family Photography Chelsea MacorSeattle Family Discovery BeachHow To Style Family PhotosSeattle Kids Photography Chelsea MacorSeattle Family Blogger

Last month I had the pleasure of working with Seattle family photographer, Chelsea Macor.  We cooked up a plan to shoot at the beach during “the golden hour” – yep, after dinner into almost bedtime (the low light of sunset provides beautiful lighting).  In exchange for good behavior, I bribed the kids with a dessert picnic.  This included magical creature cakes (decorated by the girls) and champagne to relax the adults.

While sharing these photos, Chelsea and I thought it would be fun to also do a quick Q&A about styling your family for a photo session.  I get asked a lot from clients and friends how to style families for these types of shoots and I want to acknowledge that dressing your own family for photos is stressful.  Dressing other’s families is waaaaay easier because, as a stylist, I don’t have to hear if something is uncomfortable or if someone doesn’t want to wear a particular color or style.  Taking photos is stressful enough, so I suggest trying to get everyone in clothes that allow them to be themselves.  I know this is so tricky…for example, my son doesn’t wear buttons (or pants), my hubs only wears blue tones, and my daughters’ hair is always going to look crazy!

Oh, and I also suggest magical creature cake!

Chelsea: I often recommend clients pick a jumping off point (mom’s outfit, inspiration pic, etc) for choosing their clothing.  How do you pull your outfits together?

I start with a common neutral color that will unify a family’s look.  We chose navy blue (yes, navy is a neutral).  We all look good in blue and (as stated above), my husband truly only wears blue and black.  As such, we already have a lot of blue in our wardrobes.  Because it is a great neutral, many other colors look good with it and can compliment one another.  Plus, with a common color, I’m all about mixing patterns because the color palette can make the group look cohesive.  Also, with regards to the other colors and patterns, I do not like to be too matchy-matchy.  Instead, I try to compliment yet all look different (and also capture each person’s unique style).  Therefore, I am mindful that the patterns look good together but are not too similar.  For example, my son is in horizontal stripes, my eldest daughter in a tie-dye with a horizontal pattern and my youngest daughter is wearing a micro vertical stripe skirt (all in navy/white).  I then add in color with my son’s green shorts, my daughter’s floral print top (with hints of red) and my graphic print dress.  Does this all make sense?

Chelsea: What things did you take into consideration when deciding what to wear?  For instance; your house, the vibe, etc.

I usually prefer an outdoor setting for our family photos.  First, my kids are always so active, so there is plenty for them to do.  I love natural shots of them playing (rather than being too posed).  I also love beach shoots because then we don’t have to wear shoes (at least the kids don’t).  I find shoes to be the most difficult part of family styling because my kids are SO picky about their footwear.  My son generally only wear sneakers (and they are hideous) and my girls can be equally as finicky.

Chelsea: What feeling or vibe were you trying to communicate with your clothing? We’re a really casual family.  Generally, I allow my kids to pick-out their own outfits (I still buy their clothes, so they are making choices within my parameters!).  I want my kids to make their own choices and be their own people, so I really want our photos to reflect that.  People that know us would think it was awkward if we were all too perfectly styled, quaffed, or posed.  My goal for our family photos are to capture us, in this moment in time.  Perhaps a more pulled-together version but still us.

Chelsea: When it comes down to it, does comfort or style win?

Ha! This is a funny one.  Generally, with regards to my looks, I would always say style.  But, as a mom and for my family, I definitely now lean more towards comfort.  I know, shocker!  I no longer have the energy to fight certain battles (it’s so true that you DO have to choose), and I want everyone to have a good time.  Nothing is worse than taking photos smiling through gritted teeth as you correct your children (and spouse!).  Oddly, this sentiment has also begun to creep into my personal daily style as well.  You will more often find me in sneakers than heels these days.  It’s simply not worth the pain as you chase your busy family around!  (Who ever thought I would be saying this…and on the record, no less?!)

Chelsea: What advice would you give parents who don’t feel like picking out and styling clothes is their strength?

Hmmm…hire a professional.  Or, if not, give yourself time, especially if you don’t feel like styling is your strong suit.  Honestly, you’re being lazy if you dress everyone in the same matching tee or head to one store and pick out unifying looks.  I always suggest starting in your existing wardrobes.  Pull pieces that your family actually wears (yet is in good shape – meaning not too worn, stained, etc).  See first what those pieces look like together.  Is there a unifying color?  From there, you can come up with a shopping list for additional items that can pull everyone together.  Stretch yourself – add and mix patterns and differing styles.  You know your family best, try to find pieces that reflect the individuals yet also look like you all belong.  In other words, do not leave styling to the last minute!

Also, you don’t have to break the bank to style your kids.  I’m loving the Target kids’ lines “Art Class” (Romie’s tie-dye dress is from this line) and “Cat & Jack.”  Jack’s tee is H&M (they have great basics as well).  Other kids’ favorites include Zara, Tea and Mini Boden.

My husband is the trickiest (honestly!).  I have to choose something for him that he already owns.  A classic pair of dark denim and a button-down shirt always looks good on a man.

Finally, steam or iron your clothes before your shoot.  And wear natural hair and makeup – this isn’t your wedding moment, be yourself!

Crafting a Community

March 9, 2018

Macarons & Macrame Pop-UpSeattle Craft Event Pacific PlaceMacarons & Macrame Event SeattleYay Parties, The Kirsty Files and What Jenn WoreSeattle CreativesIt is an unintentional yet happy coincidence that I am sharing our most recent creative endeavor on International Women’s Day.  When my pals Kirsty, Erin, and I were approached by Pacific Place to host a crafting event, we were challenged to both produce and teach a craft, and fill the seats.  Ultimately, the fun evening that transpired is a testament to the confidence, creativity, and humor that a community of women can create when working together and bringing together a group of other crafty women.

Together with the Pacific Place team, we dreamed up a French bohemian-inspired evening of “Macarons & Macramé” – complete with Erin of Yay! Parties & Co‘s beautiful vintage rentals, sweet confections from Trophy Cupcakes, wine and small bites from il Forniao, and a modern twist on the quintessential 1970’s boho macramé plant hanger.  The 5 us worked collaboratively (all while juggling day jobs) and the last minute effort required to pull it all together is a true demonstration about how women can pull off nearly anything!

Party details aside (as evidenced by the following photos, they were lovely), what I am most pleased and proud of is the community of women that gathered last Wednesday evening to learn a new skill, make new friends, and share in an evening of simple fun.  Several guests were among the tribe of women we have counted on throughout the years to show up for us.  But the majority of the group were fellow school moms, neighborhood friends, co-workers, friends of friends, and women who we didn’t know, yet saw our invitation, the poster of events in Pacific Place, or the notice in Seattle Met.  I am so honored and humbled that these women, trusted us to show up and spend their precious evening together (away from other commitments, their families or their favorite TV programs).

Thank you ladies for helping to fill this gal’s bucket.

To Erin and Kirsty, you two are so much joy that this didn’t seem like work.

To Stephanie and Hana, thank you for trusting us to host your event and for the can-do, hands-on support through to the very end.

To Saskia for your ease in taking these beautiful photos.

And to everyone who came to our workshop.  Thank YOU for your fun spirit and for trusting us with your evening.  You are my tribe…consider this your warning.

Thank you for reading!  If you are interested in future events hosted at Pacific Place you can find them here.  Stay tuned, perhaps we’ll have another craft up our sleeve soon…

Simply Gather & Create

January 17, 2018

Casual Entertaining Seattle BloggerOften times I’m guilty of not doing something until I can get it done perfectly; exactly like I imagined it.  Hosting can be a great example of this – when I finally decorate my dining room (I’m still looking for a perfect rug for the space), once we have remodeled, when I have time to cook something spectacular (read: complicated and impressive).  The list can go on.  But should it?  And in the meantime, are you still seeing your friends and spending some quality down time together?  Isn’t the purpose of friendship having someone who can relate to your messy kitchen, someone who’s willing to sit on your bare dining room floor?

Crafting TablescapeSimple Entertaining Spread

As you’ve likely seen before (like our Halloween post), a number of my creative friends like to get together regularly to craft and catch-up.  Oh, and we like to day drink…hence we have coined ourselves “The Cocktailing Crafters.”  When the holidays approached (the apitome of not having enough time!), instead of planning something “fancy,” we prioritized seeing each other.  Rather than pull together a complicated spread at a time when everyone is already spread thin, we made it simple, casual, and the result was perfectly lovely.

First, the food we mostly gathered from our local Trader Joe’s (a treasure trove for quick and easy entertaining fare).  Given that the get-together was mid-day, we decided to do an easy cheese plate (including their Stilton with cranberries), seasonal fruits such as opal apples and persimmons, and popcorn made fancy with the addition of truffle salt and parsley.  For a sweet treat, we added the cute star jam cookies (again from Trader’s) and were treated to Trophy Cupcakes’ macarons.  The result was as festive as it was delicious!

Easy Cheese Plate Trader JoesTrophy Cupcakes MacaronsHomemade Simple Truffle PopcornOf course, the cocktail is central to our gathering.  We also kept that uncomplicated by adding a splash of elderflower liqueur to our favorite bottle of sparkling.  We garnished with rosemary and a few pomegranate seeds for a festive touch.  And, while we enjoyed sipping our bubbles from vintage glassware, we kept the place settings easy yet chic with these Harlow & Grey paper plates (yes, they’re paper!).  Clean up was a snap, yet these plates elevate compostable table wear to the next level and complimented our classic black/gold themed decor.

Champagne Elderflower Liqueur CocktailEntertaining Made SimpleSimple Craft Party Ideas

Finally, the craft (because we need an excuse for the day drinking!).  Erin from Yay Parties! brought all of the supplies and taught us how to macrame wreaths using chunky yarn, brass hoops, and winter trimmings from her yard.  Yes, she did all of this in addition to her day job and thriving party rental business?!  We also used the winter trimmings for additional table decor.

Honestly, I want a crafting party to be simple and fun, with no pressure to be creative.  This one was a snap and, dare I say, macrame can be so cathartic!  I’ve found a simple tutorial to share, but Erin taught us some basic knots and we were on our way to creating.  While these wreaths were festively decorated for the holiday, the possibilities for decor are endless.  I’ve found some brass hoops and yarn…think Valentine’s or spring decor and your ready to adorn your door!  Better yet, find some like-minded girlfriends – the kind that like to day-drink and don’t mind your bare dining room floor, and you’ve got yourself a party!

The end result?  Uniquely beautiful wreaths perfect to spruce up your home. And, more importantly, we connected and caught-up without the pressure of the perfect…hostess, mom, co-worker, spouse – just let it all go and gather your tribe!

Perfectly Crafty Phases of the Moon

October 26, 2017

Crafters Box Phases of the Moon Katelyn MorsePhases of the Moon Crafters BoxGetting inspired couldn’t be easier than with a subscription to The Crafter’s Box.  I certainly enjoy crafting but often find it difficult to get started.  Enter The Crafter’s Box.  They provide all of the supplies (which vary based on the craft) and thorough instruction (including YouTube videos).  Then gather a group of like-minded creatives and presto!  A “crafternoon” with the ladies!

Hopefully you didn’t miss my post earlier this week on hosting a sophisticated Halloween soirée.  When you see our spread, you’ll understand how we coined the hashtag #cocktailingcrafters.  These crafting dates are the perfect excuse for 5 busy moms and entrepreneurs to get together to raise a glass of bubbly and get creative.  We gather before school pick-up and have until mid-afternoon to complete our projects.

Admittedly, setting up our party is half the fun.  We each have a role (although I’m not sure what mine really is??); we swoon over Erin of Yay Parties decor, nosh on delicious finger foods that our children would not likely touch, and pose as Kristen Honeycutt works her photo magic!  As you would expect, the best part of the afternoon is the conversation in between.  We appreciate each other’s unique perspective on the craft while sharing the trials of motherhood and small business ownership.

Crafting Project Phases of the MoonSeriously, The Crafter’s Box takes all of the stress out of crafting.  And yes, there is such a thing as “crafters stress” – what to do?  how to set up?  what supplies to get and where?  Often times I have creative inertia; overwhelmed with all of the possibilities and decisions.  With The Crafter’s Box it’s all…well, in the box.

And, if our party has offered inspiration for your next gals get-together, soon The Crafter’s Box will be offering a ‘Crafter’s Night’ subscription.  You can expect the same great projects, materials, and access to online training and inspiration but in a set of 5 (cocktails don’t seem to be included).  Invite the ladies, set the table, and get your craft on!Intuitive Phases of the Moon Crafters BoxAnders Shop Crafters Box Phases of the MoonSally kindly hosted our crafting party in her new shop, Anders.  In her Ballard store, you can find a beautifully curated array of sustainable home wares, organic apothecary, and unique jewelry.  Stop in to drool over her gorgeous space (the wallpaper is my favorite!) or you can peruse her selection online as well.

How to Host a Sophisticated Halloween Party

October 23, 2017

Halloween Entertaining Table DecorAutumnal DecorationsOne of the joys I have discovered in blogging is connecting with and making friends with some seriously talented people.  At the suggestion of my pal Kirsty (lifestyle blogger of The Kirsty Files), she gathered a group of creative friends that meet irregularly to spend an afternoon collaborating, crafting…and cocktailing.  As such, we have named our small group “The Cocktailing Crafters.”  All moms, all entrepreneurs, and all creatives – I am honored to find myself among this group!

We met earlier this month to craft and catch-up over a Halloween-themed spread.  I promise more on the craft to come later this week, but in the holiday spirit, I’m sharing how to host an adult Halloween party that offers a subtle and sophisticated nod to this spooktacular time of year.

The TableHalloween Dinner Party DecorSeriously, Erin of Yay Parties (an event planning & vintage party rentals business) thinks of every single detail!  She truly outdid herself with this amazing table scape and partydecor.  I loved the moody color scheme that definitely had a dark nod to the holiday yet was still classy and vintage.  Rather than the obvious black and orange, Erin choose rich brown and burgundy florals which complimented the pistachio green of the napkins and bright ferns and leaves of her floral arrangements.

And the devil is in the details.  Erin literally thinks of everything!  From vintage framed busts and antique books to glass cloches displaying animal skulls and actual toe tags (not used) to serve as signage for our food; this gal has so many fun pieces in her collection.

Halloween Table Sophisticated DecorDecorating for Halloween Dinner PartyThe MenuHalloween EntertainingWanting to keep the food light and easy to eat on small plates, we served up a cheese plate complete with a crusty baguette and paired with pistachios and figs (which just so happened to also match out decor!).  A humus platter with veggies and flat bread offered a healthy alternative and a side of veggie chips provided the crunch and salty goodness of chips but without all of the guilt!Halloween Party AppetizersAutumnal Cheese Plate

Roasted Beet Humus RecipeRoasted Beet Humus Recipe:

3 medium roasted beets (drizzle with olive oil, salt & pepper) golden beets used here
1 14 oz. can of garbanzo beans (rinsed & drained)
1/4 cup olive oil
juice from 1/2 a lemon
1 clove garlic (minced)
2 tsp sesame oil OR 1-2 tbsp tahini
1 tsp salt

garnished with “Not Without Salt” seedy salt

Recipe thanks to Sally Honeycutt.  Sally hosted our party in her beautiful new retail store, Anders Shop.  This shop is filled with unique home decor including beautiful pillows, handmade baskets, natural apothecary, one-of-a-kind jewelry, and delicious kitchen accessories – all mostly made by Seattle artisans. Come visit her wonderfully curated store in Ballard (you can also shop online too!)

The Signature Cocktail

Halloween Craft CocktailWhat would a festive party be without a signature cocktail?!  And the fact that we meet before school pick-up won’t stop ‘The Cocktailing Crafters’ from sharing a bottle of bubbly!  We had a lot of fun both coming up with our cocktail (what else were we to do with the abundance of Italian plums in Kirsty’s kitchen) and naming our drink.  Due to it’s rich color and the theme of our party, we thought ‘The Vampiro’ was most appropriate!Halloween Signature Cocktail Aperol‘The Vampiro’ cocktail recipe:

mostly champagne
a splash of aperol
a spoonful of pureed Italian plums

garnish with colorful edible flowers (we choose orange and purple pansies)
Halloween Entertaining Signature CocktailSweet Treats

The Sweet Side Seattle Halloween TreatsWe were truly spoiled by The Sweetside, who provided us with deliciously cute Halloween-themed treats.  In addition to decorated sugar cookies, we enjoyed mummy cake pops, ghostly meringues, and monster dipped oreos.  A delicious treat to close out our gathering!Halloween DIY DessertsLast but certainly not least, our entire party was photographed by Seattle wedding and portrait photographer, Kristin Honeycutt.

Stay tuned later this week, as I plan to share our ‘Phases of the Moon’ watercolor craft we completed with The Crafter’s Box.

What are your Halloween plans?  I’m barely ready at our house.  We’ve decorated, have costumes mostly prepared, and pumpkins ready to be carved.  Such a fun time of year!
