The Functional Bomber Jacket

June 7, 2017

Filson Women's Libby BomberFilson Libby Bomber JacketHow to Style CulottesYou know how I love a good bomber jacket.  So, this winter, when I got a sneak preview of Filson’s spring line, my heart skipped a beat!  In fact, when I returned to the store this past month; I had this bomber in mind.  The jacket speaks to my fashionista self; yet is as functional as one would expect coming from Filson, the historic Seattle outdoors outfitter.

And while function is at the forefront of Filson’s design (with features like feather-cloth lining in the body of the jacket for warmth and handwarmer pockets), I’m loving Filson’s fashion-forward designs this spring.  Beautiful color palettes and patterns (such as the plaid cotton shirt worn last week) and flattering cuts make these Filson pieces items that can serve both your outdoor adventures and urban pursuits.

Spring Style Preview with Macys

April 16, 2017

Spring Style Preview Macys

Spring Fashion Show MacysBring on spring style!  I had the honor of co-hosting a Spring Style Preview at Macy’s earlier this month with Darcy Camden of Styled Seattle and Carolyn Yuen Marino of Hey Pretty Thing.  It was such fun to style different spring trends in our own unique ways.  And Macy’s had plenty of bright florals, graphic prints, and charming accessories to choose from.  Below are my styles and one of Dacry’s looks that I bought from head-to-toe!

Florals: Floral prints are ubiquitous with spring.  But the print doesn’t have to be bold or overwhelming; instead I styled an office-ready look with a nod to subtle spring florals.  A small print, floral blouse can be pretty layered under spring’s quintessential topper – the trench.  I then added a cropped trouser perfect for showing off some fun gingham sandals.

Spring Florals Lucky Brandtrench: Maison Jules | blouse: Lucky Brand | trousers: BCBG MAXAZRIA| sandals: Betsey Johnson | tote: Calvin Klein

Denim: Shadow print denim seems to be everywhere this spring (shadow print is when you have two varying shades of denim).  I’m loving this look because a unique pair of jeans can amp even the most basic of outfits.  Here I’ve added a striped, boxy tee and layered a bomber jacket (bombers are here to stay!).  I added a pop of color with this orange cross-body (which also came home with me!).

Free People Bomber Jacketbomber: Free People | tee: Eileen Fisher | jeans: AG jeans| purse: Coach

Pattern Mixing: Mixing prints seems intimating but it can be as basic as ‘Style 101’ when you stick with a coherent color pattern.  Black and white is a particularly easy one, as seen below.  The black and white stripe of the skirt is mirrored in the black and white color pallet and striped trim of this bomber (told you about the bomber jackets!).  The bright red is picked up in this fabulous mini-bag; which is also a major spring trend.  And I finished the look with a heeled mule – which is a shoe that looks great with both skirts and dresses as well as jeans.

Vince Camuto Floral Bomberbomber: Vince Camuto | skirt: Rachel Rachel Roy | tee: Maison Jules | mules: Nine West | purse: Michael Kors

Key Piece: For my ‘Key Spring Piece’ I choose a denim jacket.  I have always loved a denim jacket – especially in Seattle, they can compliment any spring and summer look.  This year the fit is oversized and distressed.  The slouchy silhouette adds a casual vibe to a more dressed-up look or contrasts with a skinny jean.  With this particular jacket (which I also own), the lighter, distressed wash pairs easily with darker denim.  I bought it earlier this spring and have been wearing it almost daily (currently paired over my uniform of jeans and a long cardigan).

Floral Free People Slip Dressdenim jacket: Free People | slip: Free People | jeans: AG Jeans | sandals: Michael Kors | scarf: Eileen Fisher

Accessories: I love the organic accessories you see as the weather warms in spring.  Raffia totes and wedges, wood bangles, feather and crystal layered necklaces all tell the same story as they augment a basic jeans and tee ensemble.  And rethink your basic scarf; using the pop of color as a belt instead!

Raffia Tote for Springsandals: Michael Kors | tote: Ralph Lauren | scarf: Patricia Nash

To close the show, several fellow Seattle style bloggers appeared as guests on the runway, all styled by Darcy.  As I mentioned, I already own the jacket that Marellen modeled but I love the lace combined with a graphic tee – I literally bought the outfit right off of her!  The mix of the lady-like, brightly colored lace skirt paired with a casually knotted tee and topped with the oversized jacket makes for an interesting look with a slight devil-may-care attitude.

Maison Jules Lace Skirtskirt: Maison Jules | tee: Lucky Brand | denim jacket: Free People | sandals: Michael Kors

Happy Monday!  What’s inspiring your spring wardrobe?  Please leave a comment.

2016 Trends & Sale Picks

December 29, 2016

Lace tunic worn for fallThe end of the year is a sentimental time and evokes feelings of nostalgia. With regards to my blog, it’s always fun to review the style trends of 2016 and predict what will remain current into the coming year. Below are some of my favorite style moments from this year, including pieces I will continue to wear into 2017.  Also, as usual, I’m throwing in some shopping picks…all of which are on sale (tis the time of year to snap up some deals, after all)!

How to wear culottesTrends for 2016 wide-leg cropped

Oh, how I love a cropped, wide leg pant?! Call them culottes, or not; I’m still in love with the wide silhouette and ankle grazing length.  However, always keep proportions in mind here. Tuck, belt or wear a more fitted top to balance the voluminous proportion of the pant (and show off your figure).

Bomber jacket trends 2016

Bomber styles became 2016’s denim jacket. I’m still obsessing over my current collection! Satin, leather, cotton, and long or short; there is a bomber jacket for everyone in 2017!

Striped Bodycon dressCropped Top paired with maxi skirt

This may be a divisive trend, but body con dressing made a resurgence this year. The bodysuit even returned in vogue. However, there is a simple way of beginning to embrace your curves – try a more fitted, slimming cotton dress (make sure there is a bit of stretch), then dress it down with a pair of sneakers so that you feel more street-wise and less Jessica Rabbit.  Or layer with a more casual piece like a vest or denim jacket; showing off some of your figure but in a more comfortable way.

Brooks Heritage Vanguard SneakersI’m not getting out of my sneakers anytime soon! I’ve loved seeing the street-style and athletic-wear inspired fashions of 2016.  As athleisure continues to be a huge trend, we’ll all be rockin’ our favorite kicks well into 2017!

How-To Style an Oversized Cardigan

Styling a Statement Coat

Oversized and long car coats are pieces that I gravitate to year after year. In fact, I had too many pictures to share! The long length and cozy knit make them ideal for in-between-the-season dressing and are perfect for colder weather layers. In Seattle’s climate, I basically wear mine 11 months our of the year! Further justification for my collection.

Buki Cocoon Coat

My favorite cocoon coat from Buki is now $100 off! Use code “Cocoon” at checkout.

Velvet Pumps

Finally, I leave you with this important thought: a good shoe can take you anywhere.

Thank you so very much for joining me on this stylish journey. 2016 has been a year full of changes for me and I have enjoyed bringing new content, interesting collaborations, and unique photo shoots to life on this blog. I hope that you have been inspired as I have been this year and I look forward to bringing you more style inspiration in the year to come.

Happy New Year and cheers to 2017!! ~Jenn

PS. You can still find the tunic I’m wearing above here and my all-time favorite booties EVER.

Street Wise Activewear

August 22, 2016

Styling a bomber jacket

Sometimes the best outfit inspiration comes from unexpected places.  Like your gym bag.  We spend a lot of money on “athleisure” or “performance wear”…whatever you want to call them, whether you truly work out in your activewear or not (no judgement here).  But why not get the most “bang for your buck” and style your activewear outside of the gym?  Now, I’m not advocating for your standard yoga pants ensemble (we all know how to do that).  Get creative with clothes you may ordinarily relegate to working out and you may just find an edgy, or unexpected compliment to an otherwise ordinary outfit!

Styling Athleisure Wear

Brooks Run Mist Tee

If you caught Friday’s post, you saw this Brooks tee styled in a standard active look.  But this glittering gold message deserves more attention than the audience on my morning run (especially since I’m an early runner!).  To give the tee a bit more interested and some shape, I’ve knotted it at the waist – this could also be achieved with tucking.  Then to take this look from morning workout into cocktail hour, I’ve added a bit of shimmer with a satin bomber jacket and some edgy accessories, all paired with a slimming pair of dark jeans.  This look could easily have been worn with sneakers, but I’m keeping it more dressed-up here with a pair of heeled sandals (a bootie would have looked cool too).  I consider this outfit a home RUN! (I couldn’t help it…)

Da’ Bomb

April 6, 2016

Bomber Jacket Styled for SpringI’m pretty confident the title of this post says it all…I have bomber fever.  So when I stumbled across this rosy, bronzy, most definitely shimmery bomber jacket, I had to make it mine.  I love the vintage throw-back feel; relaxed yet utterly cool.  And, the jacket amps up an otherwise simple jeans and white tee ensemble.  In addition, I added a loosely tied bandana instead of wearing jewelry.  Seriously, ‘Members Only’ people!

Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted t Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted the new year feeling inspired with a renewed intention for my account; to share with you the goodies I love, wear, try. Unfiltered and honest. That’s what I’m here for. But then...2021 arrived feeling much like her older sister, 2020. Instead, I’ve avoided a lot of social media; choosing to tune into various news outlets and into my family. So, HERE WE ARE. A post proving that I got dressed yesterday, wearing some of my new favorites (these @flamingosshoes white boots!) and steady stand-bys (year 2 wearing this @notmondaymercantile beanie on repeat). I took the kids out after school to run a couple of errands and connect with a business I love to support; we made plans for a spring share. Man, it felt good to get out! And now, I’m posting early before I’ve read the morning news. So, it’s happened.

Please stay safe, remain respectful, and true to yourself. Social media is a beautiful way to connect, create, and inspire...but can also be a dangerous rabbit hole of misinformation and an opportunity for people to behave in a way they ordinarily wouldn’t in person. Off my soap box. Have a lovely Friday!#wordsfrommyheart #realoutfitgram #flamingosshoes #whiteboots #notmondaymoments
Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you all but enjoyed a nice long break. Heading back home after some snow time and I’m feeling re-energized (for now). Isn’t it funny how a change in the calendar can make you feel different? Are you a “new year, new you” kinda gal or more indifferent? I do like a good reset. Even though we’ll be doing more of the same early this year, I’m feeling more optimistic. For now. Cheers to 2021!

Also, posted in stories a nearly identical photo of us from last January at the top of @schweitzer_mountain. While the photos look the same, it’s fun to think that we now are Sandpoint homeowners! A positive outcome of 2020. #newyearonthemountain #snowbest #schweitzermountain #skifamily
Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all the boxes this year. Thinking of everyone not able to spend time with loved ones this year. I’m so grateful for our little family but really missing my parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, my in-laws. Over a year seems far too long to be apart; but we all need to continue to be safe. It matters. #christmassweater #christmas2020 #staysafestayhome #vintagesweater

Like the new-to-me homemade marshmallow recipe, @thekirstyfiles and I have the pleasure of bringing to you in partnership with @pacific_place. We encourage you to invite a few pals to a zoom date, pop a bottle of bubbly, and create these delicious confections together. I promise they’re relatively fool proof (I pulled them off!) AND a sugar-high afternoon spent with friends (even virtually) will be sure to get you in the holiday spirit! Tune in to Pacific Place’s IGTV or YouTube to see the full tutorial, including my gaff when my marshmallow began moving into the “hard ball” territory (note: this recipe does require a candy thermometer and the ability to read it!). The belly laughs, chit chat, and groans (as we tried on a number of jeans) provided the escape from reality that I needed. Other things I love? Soft luxury cashmere, designer denim that fits like a glove, and packable hats (yes, packable!). All can be found @willaseattle; a small, women-owned boutique located in the heart of the Queen Anne neighborhood in Seattle. Be sure to check out our stories as @thekirstyfiles and I share holiday-perfect gifts for your sister, mother, girlfriends...yourself! Lucky for Kirsty and I, our husbands also know the lovely owner, Liz (and she has our wishlists on file)!

Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for you Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for yourself, aka #stayathomestyle. Sure, 2020 may be the year of the sweatpant (combined with a sleeping bag-like coat, as seen here). And yes, a mask chain is this year’s hottest accessory. BUT I still take care to actually get dressed each day. And while lipstick may no longer be a part of my daily routine (I mean, was it ever??), it’s still important to be pulled together..if only for my own mental health. And even if no one else sees it but the grocery clerk. #whatmamaworemonday #sweatpantsseason
