Staying Fit During Holiday Madness

November 17, 2017

I’m so excited to share a new series aimed at helping us all stay on target and continue to work toward our fitness goals, no matter what the busy holiday season may throw at us.  And while you may be traveling, attending parties, running errands, completing year-end business, cooking, and eating all sorts of food you ordinarily couldn’t justify; let’s all commit to staying on track together this holiday season (yes, lets!).  And then maybe January won’t seem as bad.

I’ve teamed up with two of my favorite bloggers and pals, to share a couple of easy moves you can do anywhere, at anytime, to move your body and stay active this winter.  Wait…you come here for your fashion fix?  I’m the first to admit that I am no expert when it comes to fitness biomechanics; however, as an athlete and active person, I care about remaining fit, being healthy, and staying in shape.  That being said, I did enlist the help of an expert: enter Angie Kennedy, a certified fitness trainer.  In addition to her masters in Applied Physiology, and the group that she trains in total body workouts each week, Angie also writes the amazingly resourceful and witty fitness-based blog, American Heavyweight.  I brought along my fashionable and fit friend, Kirsty of The Kirsty Files, for fun (she mostly brings the laughs).

Today we are sharing a 5 easy moves that you can do at your local playground…or the playground at the hotel, or even your childhood elementary school when visiting your family for the holidays!  Be sure to head on over to Angie’s blog for all of the particulars (including helpful do’s and don’ts).  I’ve also included bloopers (they were mostly bloopers) in my instastories…be sure to follow along!

Correct posture for a pull-up (shoulders back, abs engaged)

versus slumped shoulders and a weak core (a no, no).

Back to fashion.  I would be remiss not to mention the fabulous Brooks activewear we’re sporting.  Fashion meets function in their new, geometric print tights that keep you warm and chic during your workouts (I must also mention their high-waisted goodness).  And we are all wearing the new Brooks Levitate sneaker; which have just the right amount of cushion, adding a little (not too much) bounce to your step.  Honestly, in addition to the awesome bright turquoise color, I can’t say enough great things about the comfort and fit of this shoe!  I’m a convert – and I’m usually very particular about the shoes that I run in (this is the only time I advocate for function over fashion!)

On Angie:   Chaser Pant | Streaker Long Sleeve | Bold Reflective Headband
On Kirsty:  Greenlight Tights | Dash Hoodie
On Jenn:    Ghost Crop| Cascadia Thermal Jacket | Seattle Collapsible Hat

Check back in next week, as we share a dynamic warm-up for a run.  Plus we have more fun fitness-inspired content to come throughout the holiday season.  Fitness Fridays or Fit Mom’s Behaving Badly…we can’t yet decide on a name.

Thanks for reading.  Happy Friday! ~Jenn

A special ‘thank you’ to Brooks for collaborating with us on this post.  As always, you can expect all of the content and opinions expressed on this blog to be my very own.

Nordstrom Sale: Kids Picks & Activewear Faves

July 20, 2017

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Kid Picks

The fall sale of the season is in full swing for Nordstrom cardholders.  Hoarding miles instead of Nordstrom points?  Not to worry, your moment is almost here (finally!); as the sale opens to the public tomorrow!  Prepare your wish list and shop early because, although most everything does get replenished, inventory can be low!  Especially for those popular items (like those in the catalog…or the Vince loafers).  In the meantime, I am offering some kid’s clothes inspiration, because it feels good to shop for others.  Oh, and some activewear picks, well, because we all need that kind of inspiration!

Boys Clothes

The Star Wars sweatshirt is on the top on my son’s list.  And, because I’m always looking for a solid jean, these Hudson straight leg ones have fit the bill for the past couple of years.  Lastly, new Nike sneakers are his request (mine is that he waits until the start of school to wear the new ones!)

Boys Shoes

Girls Clothes

I’m always a fan of the Tucker & Tate, Nordstrom brand.  In particular, their leggings are always a quality product and a great value (and my girls are hard on their pants!).  I also got the girls’ last year’s plaid dress and have just bought this year’s update in navy and red.  Light-up Skechers are also on their wish list (honestly, I have mixed feelings about these).  And I always love the Tea Collection prints and their cotton pieces are so well-made.

Girls Shoes

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Activewear Picks

Women’s Activewear

Several of these picks either came home with me or I already own them.  Seriously, the Nike ‘Legendary’ tight is life changing.  So high-waisted, and SO tight…seriously corset material.  A real struggle to get on but once they are, you’ve never felt so “supported” and slim.  And the Brooks ‘Chaser’ short are an easy go-to.  I own these in red but I’m eyeing this new pattern with reflective stripes in the design for safe, after-hours workouts.  Last but not least, I love all of the Adidas gear on sale this year.  I bought a replacement for last year’s Logo tank; I’ve worn it so much.

What’s on your list?  What has made it home that you love?  Ready for tomorrow?  As always, leave a comment.

Thanks for reading! ~Jenn

Summer’s Perfect Pair

May 17, 2017

Madewell Off-the-Shoulder Bell Sleeve DressHow to Style a Dress with SneakersMadewell Off-the-Shoulder DressSchools nearly out for summer!  And while Seattle’s weather may still not be cooperating, I’m ready to trade my sweaters in favor of summer dresses. Sandals may be summer’s quintessential shoe, but they’re not always the most practical for the modern woman-on-the-go.  Enter the vintage-inspired Brooks’ Renshaw Court shoe.  Perfectly comfy and stylish; white leather pairs well with all of my lighter summer pieces.  And the addition of the sneaker to a more feminine look gives an outfit a fun, athletic vibe…girlie meets street-style, if you will.

If you missed it earlier this week, Kirsty and I are styling our new kicks in preparation for summer weather (with hopes and bated breath).  Be sure to check back in for our “famous” (we like to think so!) 4-Way Friday post showcasing these fantastic Brooks sneakers paired with summer skirts and dresses.

Back At It With Brooks

May 15, 2017

Styling Sneakers with a SkirtSneaker and Skirt Style PairingBrooks Heritage RenshawYes, I’m the gal constantly in jeans and sneakers…I’ll happily confess.  However, as the cloudy skies finally part here in Seattle, I’m choosing to ditch my denim in favor of skirts and dresses.  I’m not readily giving up my obsession with vintage-inspired sneakers, though!

Lucky for me (or maybe I’m just convincing myself of this trend), sneakers added to a summer skirt or dress adds a street-style like flavor to any outfit.  Yes, this skirt would look killer with wedges, casual chic with a pair of flat slides, or even date-night ready with kitten-heel sandals; yet add a sneaker, and your ready for most anything.  In particular, I like how they makes a pencil skirt, like this one, more accessible in your everyday wardrobe.  While it could be a 9-5 basic, why not take this flirty skirt into the weekend by simply adding a cool sneaker?

And what a sneaker?  Brooks Heritage Collection brings another classic back to life with their newest addition, the Renshaw Court Shoe.  Inspired by 1970’s classic tennis shoes, these sneakers boast all-leather uppers and gum rubber outer soles for a perfectly retro, yet of-the-moment look sure to make your sneaker-head heart skip a beat!

Sneakers #MomStyle

February 1, 2017

Seattle Style Blogger Jennifer LovinConfession time!  This is the outfit you will see me in most every day of the week (excluding work events and Sundays, when I’m not even dressed).  Call this “Mom Style” or simply the uniform of a busy woman on-the-go; but a pair of black skinny jeans are sophisticated and can be worn with most anything.  Not to mention, a sleek pair of black sneakers help me get through my hectic schedule with ease (and in comfort!).  Add a few accessories and maybe a couple swipes of mascara, and you look put together…almost ready to face whatever the day throws at you!How to Style a Pair of SneakersHow to Layer for FallRails Hunter Plaid ShirtBrooks Heritage Collection Chariot SneakerSneakers…how I love you?!  I am an absolute devotee to a street-style sneaker (don’t get me wrong, I like the functional ones too!).  Lately, the pairs that I am reaching for most often are my Brooks Heritage sneakers (also seen here, here, and here).  I’m obsessing over Brooks’ retro styling crafted in unique materials (think satin, pique, velvet, and suede) that make the sneaker totally luxe.

As luck would have it, just last night I got a special sneak peek at Brooks’ spring line.  And it did not disappoint!  New Vanguard and Chariot styles in fresh spring colors (one color story is inspired by gelato – pastels like pistachio, peach, and raspberry) and and entirely “new again” sneaker inspired by their early tennis collection.  Need-less-to-say, I have several additions to my sneaker wish-list!

Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted t Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted the new year feeling inspired with a renewed intention for my account; to share with you the goodies I love, wear, try. Unfiltered and honest. That’s what I’m here for. But then...2021 arrived feeling much like her older sister, 2020. Instead, I’ve avoided a lot of social media; choosing to tune into various news outlets and into my family. So, HERE WE ARE. A post proving that I got dressed yesterday, wearing some of my new favorites (these @flamingosshoes white boots!) and steady stand-bys (year 2 wearing this @notmondaymercantile beanie on repeat). I took the kids out after school to run a couple of errands and connect with a business I love to support; we made plans for a spring share. Man, it felt good to get out! And now, I’m posting early before I’ve read the morning news. So, it’s happened.

Please stay safe, remain respectful, and true to yourself. Social media is a beautiful way to connect, create, and inspire...but can also be a dangerous rabbit hole of misinformation and an opportunity for people to behave in a way they ordinarily wouldn’t in person. Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you all but enjoyed a nice long break. Heading back home after some snow time and I’m feeling re-energized (for now). Isn’t it funny how a change in the calendar can make you feel different? Are you a “new year, new you” kinda gal or more indifferent? I do like a good reset. Even though we’ll be doing more of the same early this year, I’m feeling more optimistic. For now. Cheers to 2021!

Also, posted in stories a nearly identical photo of us from last January at the top of @schweitzer_mountain. While the photos look the same, it’s fun to think that we now are Sandpoint homeowners! A positive outcome of 2020. #newyearonthemountain #snowbest #schweitzermountain #skifamily
Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all the boxes this year. Thinking of everyone not able to spend time with loved ones this year. I’m so grateful for our little family but really missing my parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, my in-laws. Over a year seems far too long to be apart; but we all need to continue to be safe. It matters. #christmassweater #christmas2020 #staysafestayhome #vintagesweater

Like the new-to-me homemade marshmallow recipe, @thekirstyfiles and I have the pleasure of bringing to you in partnership with @pacific_place. We encourage you to invite a few pals to a zoom date, pop a bottle of bubbly, and create these delicious confections together. I promise they’re relatively fool proof (I pulled them off!) AND a sugar-high afternoon spent with friends (even virtually) will be sure to get you in the holiday spirit! Tune in to Pacific Place’s IGTV or YouTube to see the full tutorial, including my gaff when my marshmallow began moving into the “hard ball” territory (note: this recipe does require a candy thermometer and the ability to read it!). The belly laughs, chit chat, and groans (as we tried on a number of jeans) provided the escape from reality that I needed. Other things I love? Soft luxury cashmere, designer denim that fits like a glove, and packable hats (yes, packable!). All can be found @willaseattle; a small, women-owned boutique located in the heart of the Queen Anne neighborhood in Seattle. Be sure to check out our stories as @thekirstyfiles and I share holiday-perfect gifts for your sister, mother, girlfriends...yourself! Lucky for Kirsty and I, our husbands also know the lovely owner, Liz (and she has our wishlists on file)!

Also very near and dear to my heart, Willa is the epitome of shopping local. The shelves are stocked with unique, small business designs; including many Seattle businesses. When you shop local, you not only support your community but also curate a look all your own!

Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for you Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for yourself, aka #stayathomestyle. Sure, 2020 may be the year of the sweatpant (combined with a sleeping bag-like coat, as seen here). And yes, a mask chain is this year’s hottest accessory. BUT I still take care to actually get dressed each day. And while lipstick may no longer be a part of my daily routine (I mean, was it ever??), it’s still important to be pulled together..if only for my own mental health.
