Outfits: Must-Have Additions

January 22, 2015

P1100701P1100669You know when you purchase something and you immediately put it on, that it was money well-spent.  In fact, that is my criteria for any new additions to my already vast wardrobe.  I leave the tags on my new item, with the receipt tucked inside of a pocket or punctured over the hanger.  If in 2 weeks I haven’t worn the item (ensuring, of course, that this is within the return period), then back it goes to the store.

P1100642

When this sweater arrived, I knew this was a must-have piece that would get a lot of wear. Although it’s a bold print, it’s just the thing that can take my basic jeans and tee uniform up several notches.  Easily worn as a light jacket or a sweater, both the Aztec pattern and the eyelash texture make it a truly unique and swoon-worthy addition.

Sweater: Ella Moss (sale!) | Shirt: Cloth & Stone (similar) | Denim: Rag & Bone | Sneakers: Converse | Handbag: Milly (similar) | Belt: J.Crew (similar) | Necklaces: Veronica & Harold, Margaret Elizabeth

What’s a piece you can’t live without? What item is currently elevating your style-game? Please leave a comment or any suggestions. As always, thanks for reading! ~Jenn

4-Way Friday: Accessory InVESTment

June 20, 2014

Have you ever heard of “4-Way Friday”? In addition to designing beautiful jewelry (which you often see me wearing), my good friend and fellow fashionista, Kirsty, writes a style blog. When we can coordinate, I have contributed to several posts in which we style the same piece, 4 ways. Both born shoppers, Kirsty and I have many of the same items (we often shop together and also trade pictures and links for inspiration). However, I would describe our personal styles as being very different. I love her “boho-chic” looks but can rarely pull them off with the finesse she does. Therefore, it’s always fun to see how the two of us will wear the same piece in different ways. For more of Kirsty’s style, check out her blog.

On her most recent visit to Seattle, Kirsty and I snagged a faux leather moto vest at a Dolce Vita sample sale. Imagine a large room in a 100-year-old building downtown filled with clothes, shoes and frantic bargain shoppers. The communal dressing room was so packed with women, we were scoring (and vying for) others rejects. A nightmare to some…a dream come true to shoppers like Kirsty and myself.

Below you will find us sporting our moto vest in 4 different looks. This vest is an excellent example of an accessory that can elevate the most basic of outfits. If you read my blog with regularity, you may notice my love for layering and accessorizing. Adding special pieces is an inexpensive and unique way to restyle to your wardrobe. Although wardrobe staples may take the lion’s share of your shopping budget, don’t overlook the importance of sparing some extra dollars for those unexpected items that will make your look your own.

Outfit #1: Classically Chic Moto
Kirsty contrasts the moto’s edginess with classic extras like the nude pumps, simple aviators and strands of silver and pearl beads. Then she adds a punch of color with the green earrings and clutch. An otherwise basic jeans and tee ensemble is taken to an entirely new level with the addition of accessories – worthy of a night out!

Earrings: Lucia K. | Necklace: Lucia K. | Clutch: Hobo, Queen Anne Dispatch (different but amazing.)
4wf vest 3T-shirt: Mango | Jeans: Bluelab (similar) | Shoes: Charles by Charles David, Nordstrom
Outfit #2: Sporty Moto
By adding style with the leather moto vest and pops of color with my sneakers and necklace, I create an outfit from an otherwise monochromatic (and boring) ensemble. Strip away all of the accessories, and I am simply wearing a pair of white jeans and a tee. I particularly like how the red sneakers add an unexpected sportiness to the outfit.

P1070968
Sneakers: Nike, Nordstrom
P1070962

Outfit #3: Boho Moto
Again, basic shorts and a tank paired with the leather vest and a scarf tied as a head band creates a totally unique look. I really love how the stripe in the scarf is echoed in the fun chevron print sandal; unifying the accessories and pulling the outfit together.

4wf vest 10Shoes: Ella Moss (on sale!)
4wf vest 12
Scarf: Threads 4 Thought | Earrings: Lucia K.
Outfit #4: Dressy Moto
Wearing heels with this dress definitely makes the dress date-night material. However; by adding the vest and a strappy flat sandal, the dress becomes less va-va-voom and more cool. Top off the look with a scarf and a leopard clutch to add some color and pattern to an otherwise grey ensemble.

Dress: Monrow | Bracelets (worn throughout): Queen Anne Dispatch, Giles & Brother and Madewell
P1090009
Clutch: Clare V | Shoes: Dolce Vita (sample sale find)
P1090014
Earrings: Lucia K
P1070992
Scarf: H&M (on sale!)
Leave a comment with your must-have accessory and let us know what you think about “4-Way Friday.” We’re always looking for interesting ideas for our next posts.
Thanks for reading! ~ Jenn & Kirsty

How To: Ode to Lounge Pants

April 25, 2014

I have a confession: I LOVE COMFORT.  I admit it.  I want to be as comfy as the next person but I am not about to sacrifice on style.  Enter, the lounge pant – fashion’s most basic solution to comfort.

Now there are 3 things to keep in mind in order to ensure that you don’t look like you’re wearing your pajama pants (when, in fact, you are):

1) Shoes.  Throw on a pair of flip flops and your pants are questionable.  Instead, elevate your lounge pant with a structured shoe.  A wide-leg pant begs for a wedge sandal, making your legs look miles long.  A more narrow pant can be paired with nearly anything – an oxford, pointy-toe flat, gladiator sandal or even a heel for evening or work wear.  Just stay away from tennis shoes…that can be confusing.

shirt (similar): Trouve | pants (similar): Joie | clutch (similar): Clare V | necklace (similar): J. Crew

2) Define your waist.  Since the pants are loose, you need to show off your figure by defining your mid-section.  Believe it or not, making slouch fashionable can be tricky!  Therefore, add a belt, wear a more fitted or cropped top or tuck (the proverbial mullet-tuck continues to be my favorite).

Anthropologie (can’t you tell?): Pants | Tee | Belt | Scarf

3) Accessorize.  Your outfit is always more complete when you add thoughtful personal touches.  Accessories are never more important than when you’re getting away with such a comfortable pant! Add a necklace (or two), a scarf or a colorful bag.  Your pajamas will never have looked so chic!

Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted t Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted the new year feeling inspired with a renewed intention for my account; to share with you the goodies I love, wear, try. Unfiltered and honest. That’s what I’m here for. But then...2021 arrived feeling much like her older sister, 2020. Instead, I’ve avoided a lot of social media; choosing to tune into various news outlets and into my family. So, HERE WE ARE. A post proving that I got dressed yesterday, wearing some of my new favorites (these @flamingosshoes white boots!) and steady stand-bys (year 2 wearing this @notmondaymercantile beanie on repeat). I took the kids out after school to run a couple of errands and connect with a business I love to support; we made plans for a spring share. Man, it felt good to get out! And now, I’m posting early before I’ve read the morning news. So, it’s happened.

Please stay safe, remain respectful, and true to yourself. Social media is a beautiful way to connect, create, and inspire...but can also be a dangerous rabbit hole of misinformation and an opportunity for people to behave in a way they ordinarily wouldn’t in person. Off my soap box. Have a lovely Friday!#wordsfrommyheart #realoutfitgram #flamingosshoes #whiteboots #notmondaymoments
Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you all but enjoyed a nice long break. Heading back home after some snow time and I’m feeling re-energized (for now). Isn’t it funny how a change in the calendar can make you feel different? Are you a “new year, new you” kinda gal or more indifferent? I do like a good reset. Even though we’ll be doing more of the same early this year, I’m feeling more optimistic. For now. Cheers to 2021!

Also, posted in stories a nearly identical photo of us from last January at the top of @schweitzer_mountain. While the photos look the same, it’s fun to think that we now are Sandpoint homeowners! A positive outcome of 2020. #newyearonthemountain #snowbest #schweitzermountain #skifamily
Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all the boxes this year. Thinking of everyone not able to spend time with loved ones this year. I’m so grateful for our little family but really missing my parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, my in-laws. Over a year seems far too long to be apart; but we all need to continue to be safe. It matters. #christmassweater #christmas2020 #staysafestayhome #vintagesweater
Let’s make merry! Although holiday traditions ma Let’s make merry! Although holiday traditions may look different this year; we have an opportunity to get creative and share in new experiences. Like the new-to-me homemade marshmallow recipe, @thekirstyfiles and I have the pleasure of bringing to you in partnership with @pacific_place. We encourage you to invite a few pals to a zoom date, pop a bottle of bubbly, and create these delicious confections together. I promise they’re relatively fool proof (I pulled them off!) AND a sugar-high afternoon spent with friends (even virtually) will be sure to get you in the holiday spirit! Tune in to Pacific Place’s IGTV or YouTube to see the full tutorial, including my gaff when my marshmallow began moving into the “hard ball” territory (note: this recipe does require a candy thermometer and the ability to read it!). Cheers to making the most out of holiday 2020! #homemademarshmallows #pacificplaceseattle #craftingtogether
Ooooh...how I love a good shopping day with a frie Ooooh...how I love a good shopping day with a friend. The belly laughs, chit chat, and groans (as we tried on a number of jeans) provided the escape from reality that I needed. Sometimes you don’t realize just how much you miss something until you get to enjoy it again!

Other things I love? Soft luxury cashmere, designer denim that fits like a glove, and packable hats (yes, packable!). All can be found @willaseattle; a small, women-owned boutique located in the heart of the Queen Anne neighborhood in Seattle. Be sure to check out our stories as @thekirstyfiles and I share holiday-perfect gifts for your sister, mother, girlfriends...yourself! Lucky for Kirsty and I, our husbands also know the lovely owner, Liz (and she has our wishlists on file)!

Also very near and dear to my heart, Willa is the epitome of shopping local. The shelves are stocked with unique, small business designs; including many Seattle businesses. When you shop local, you not only support your community but also curate a look all your own!

Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for you Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for yourself, aka #stayathomestyle. Sure, 2020 may be the year of the sweatpant (combined with a sleeping bag-like coat, as seen here). And yes, a mask chain is this year’s hottest accessory. BUT I still take care to actually get dressed each day. And while lipstick may no longer be a part of my daily routine (I mean, was it ever??), it’s still important to be pulled together..if only for my own mental health. And even if no one else sees it but the grocery clerk. #whatmamaworemonday #sweatpantsseason

On the eve of Black Friday sales bonanza, I hope t On the eve of Black Friday sales bonanza, I hope to inspire, remind, urge, and even beg you to ignore all of the crazy cyber sales that have been creeping into your inbox for the past week and instead SHOP SMALL this holiday season. Yes, perhaps it’s less convenient and even less of a “deal” but this pandemic is putting an even greater strain on the small and local businesses that are the absolute life blood of our communities. And, in addition to supporting an entrepreneur and neighbor, you’ll likely find more creative, individual, and unique gifts for your loved ones by shopping a small business.
