Friday Favorites: Wide & Green

April 26, 2019

J.Crew Tiger Print SetOk, I’m bringing back an old favorite that I had once committed to many moons ago.  I’d love to share what I’m diggin’ each Friday.  But, in an effort to not overcommit and under deliver, I’m just going to start one Friday at a time.  And with wide leg pants and avocado toast, so we’re starting off well!

Especially with spring now in full swing, it’s an exciting time to try a new trend, revamp your skin care routine, or try a new take on a favorite recipe.

Wide Leg Pants

I love this silhouette, especially as the weather warms up enough for you to get out of your jeans.  Wide leg pants are also so easy to dress-up or down; pair with a denim jacket and tee and wear with a sneaker for a casual look, and then tuck-in a blouse and put on a pair of heels for a night out.  I was inspired to purchase the green pair below after seeing them on a woman worn with an oversized blazer, a tucked-in tee (to define her waist) and a pair of oxfords.

Don’t be shy – there is a pair for everyone (yes, even you petite ladies!).  Be mindful of length and width with regards to proportions.  For example, the Madewell pair below are a more slim version of their cult favorite wide-leg pant.

Zinc Oxide

I would consider myself an authority on sunscreen.  I apply everyday (and reapply with this Colorescience powder) and my kids do the same…no small feat.  Yet, I did not know that your sunscreen should have a minimum of 10% zinc oxide (my current go-to only has 7%!).  Zinc is the only physical barrier that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.  Ultra violet light comes in through your windows and UV rays are even emitted from both incandescent and florescent bulbs.  So yes, sunscreen everyday (your mom knows what she’s talking about!).  I haven’t yet tried the tinted SPF below, but it was recently recommended to me by a renowned Seattle dermatologist.

And this zinc balm, I’m a huge fan!  In addition to blocking UV rays, zinc can calm irritated skin and, because it stays on top of your skin, the vitamin E and organic fruit oil in this balm can penetrate better while the zinc locks it in.  I’ve used this product on scrapes and rashes (safe for young kids and sensitive skin), and I’ve also applied after my nightly serum routine to seal in all the goodness.  Oh, and it’s made by a Seattle female entrepreneur!

Avocado Toast

Need an afternoon pick-me up?  A healthy snack?  Some good fat for your morning meal?

Avocado toast can be so basic.  However, my latest way to eat this delicious fruit (yes, it has a pit and grows on a tree) is to mash a perfectly ripe avocado on top a slice of Dave’s Killer Bread (preferably the heel) then drizzle with honey and top with a pinch of salt and some red pepper flakes.  An amazing combo of sweet, salty, and spicy compliment the mild avocado flavor and nutty bread.

Hot tip: if you’re in the Seattle area, Metropolitan Market has an “Avocado Program.”  No joke.  They partner with growers who allow their fruit to ripen longer on the tree and then pack them right there in the field, to ensure maxim freshness.  This allows the customer to find a perfectly ripe avocado in their produce section.  Even more genius?  Met Market systematically pulls overly ripe avocados from the shelves each morning to make their fresh guacamole.  I need this program at my house.

What did you miss on Instagram this month?

Sway & Cake Leopard KimonoThis Sway & Cake kimono was a splurge I saved up for.  It feels right to buy something that you really want and have had your eye on.  This Seattle boutique is making these beautiful pieces out of vintage fabrics – it’s hard to choose a favorite.

Faster Way to Fat Loss LifestyleIf you’ve missed my post from last year, it’s worth a read.  Two years after revamping my diet and exercise regime, I’m still feeling healthy, energized, and confident.  I can’t say enough great things about the Faster Way to Fat Loss lifestyle.  I am so pleased when people feel find success on this program – please hit me up with any questions!

Happy Friday!  Thank you for checking-in here.  And please, leave me feedback, comments or any ideas for future posts. ~Jenn

What I’m Lovin’: Current Obsessions

May 1, 2015

150430_Thur_MaraHoffman-1(1)

I’m always on the hunt for something – I like to think this can explain my credit card bill; the delicate balance between ordering, returning, and purchasing. Lucky for you, I can do the leg-work for you! (And save you the cardiac arrest when your statement comes).

Flowy-Trench: For lack of a better descriptor, this jacket is a lighter, less-structured version of the trench.  Trenches are classic and timeless.  However, I want to wear this looser version casually, with the sleeves pushed-up, all throughout spring and summer (I do live in Seattle, after all).  I have been on the search – finding just the right material (and price) has proved tricky.  Some were too flimsy with a synthetic feel to the fabric.  Others were too structured or thick, while others were out of my price range.  Enter Topshop, my go-to for inexpensive, trend fashion.  Perfectly slouchy trench found…on to the next search!

Topshop

High-Waist Swim: This is a search that I personally have had to give up on…finally.  But not for lack of trying to make this happen! I have literally tried at least 10 suits from high to low, searching for just the right one.  I love the retro look, classic but simple design.  Balance the proportion of the larger bottom with a smaller top like a bandeau.  Avoid looking too 1950’s pinup by forgoing a classic underwire or push-up halter style.  A mismatching top paired with differing bottoms also looks effortlessly cool.

Essential Oil: I have been using various oils to moisturize my skin for sometime now – trying argon, maracuja, and even coconut oils.  In particular, I love this mixture of essential oils from a local Seattle skin care line.  This all natural blend is completely preservative and chemical-free – only plant and essential oils blended with vitamin E.  The oil has a great slippery feel, perfect for facial massage (another obsession), yet it absorbs into the skin without leaving any oily residue.  I apply both morning and night.  When getting ready for my day, I finish my skin care regime then move onto my hair, returning to do my makeup once the oil has had some time to soak into my skin.

Peep-Toe Bootie: Surprisingly difficult to find for someone with finger-toes (just in case there are others out there). In addition to being totally on-trend, these Paul Green booties are the ultimate in comfort.  The shaft is cut flatteringly low to show off some ankle (perfect when paired with summer’s dresses and culouttes!).  And, I love the sling back, making it more sandal than traditional bootie.  All-in-all, this shoe is the perfect bootie hybrid for spring and summer (because what else pairs perfectly with your jeans and a tee?!)_9861391

Eyebrow Pencil: In a previous “obsessions” post, I shared my newfound love of Korean beauty products.  This brow pencil is yet another k-beauty score! The “pencil” is more like a soft, waxy marker with a wide, angled tip.  I start applying at the highest point of my brow arch, where I want the most color delivered.  I then work my way out to where the hair is most sparse, towards the end of my brow.  I then lightly fill in towards the center (the part towards my nose), where I have the most hair.  Finish with an upward brush of the spooled end and your out the door with the perfectly filled-in, not-too penciled brow.  Since using this pencil, I’ve received numerous unsolicited compliments.

What are your obsessions? What are you searching for?? I’m always curious and willing to help – it could be my next feature!

Thanks for reading and happy Friday! ~Jenn

*BLACK* Friday Favorites

November 27, 2014

shutterstock_121706299

The deals are aplenty this Black Friday.  In fact, it was difficult to narrow down my selection, with many stores even starting their sales earlier this week.  Thus, in the spirit of “Friday Favorites,” I chose five of my favorite retailers that are hosting fabulous sales right now (act fast, these deals expire soon!)

Online sites can be overwhelming with many brands and items such as apparel, shoes, handbags, and accessories to choose from.  In order to sort through the chaos, a few simple rules to live-by when shopping online:

  1. Shop a retailer you trust.  Criteria may include free and easy shipping and returns.  And, remember my golden rule: NO final sale.
  2. Start with a list (this can include items for yourself as well!) Especially during the holiday season, shopping can seem frenetic. Be as specific as possible, but at least have in mind who and/or what occasion you are buying for.
  3. Use the search function to sort.  I usually sort by designer/brand, or (at minimum) size, item, color and/or material.  For example, you know you want to buy your aunt a cashmere sweater; sort by “sweaters”, “medium”, then “cashmere”.
  4. Shop around.  With the increasing popularity of Black Friday sales, retailers are competing for your business – you are in a position to get the very best deal.

Shopbop: Up to 25% off your order with code GOBIG14 (expires Monday, December 1st at 11:59pm PST). This is one of my go-to sites offering many trend and designer brands with 3-day free shipping and easy returns.  With few restrictions, this sale can’t be missed!

Piperlime: 25% off site-wide with code THANKFUL25 (expires November 29th at 11:59pm PST…act fast!)  Offering a diverse selection of both affordable and luxury items, Piperlime is another favorite online destination.  Always free shipping and returns, just beware of final sale!

Loeffler Randall Clutch

Aritzia: The entire site (and store) is on sale, up to 60% off!  One of my favorite retailers for unique, quality pieces; Aritzia rarely offers sale prices so this is a great opportunity to get a deal! In fact, I have been eyeing the fur vest below and finally made my move with the reduced price…an early Christmas to me!

Madewell: 25% off your entire purchase with code GIFTON (expires November 30th at 11:59pm PST). J.Crew’s sister brand offers edgier, more youthful styles for the urban fashionista on your list.  (To note: J.Crew is also offering 30% off full-price merchandise).

I wrote this special edition Friday Favorites from my childhood bedroom; home for the holiday.  A total flashback to my high school days procrastinating doing homework, while chatting on the phone (a land line, no less – with no call waiting).  I hope you enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by friends and family.  I look forward to continuing to share in your holiday preparations.  Throughout the month of December, please be sure to check back for gift-buying guides, party attire suggestions and simple tips for entertaining.

Happy Thanksgiving! With much love, Jenn

Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted t Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted the new year feeling inspired with a renewed intention for my account; to share with you the goodies I love, wear, try. Unfiltered and honest. That’s what I’m here for. But then...2021 arrived feeling much like her older sister, 2020. Instead, I’ve avoided a lot of social media; choosing to tune into various news outlets and into my family. So, HERE WE ARE. A post proving that I got dressed yesterday, wearing some of my new favorites (these @flamingosshoes white boots!) and steady stand-bys (year 2 wearing this @notmondaymercantile beanie on repeat). I took the kids out after school to run a couple of errands and connect with a business I love to support; we made plans for a spring share. Man, it felt good to get out! And now, I’m posting early before I’ve read the morning news. So, it’s happened.

Please stay safe, remain respectful, and true to yourself. Social media is a beautiful way to connect, create, and inspire...but can also be a dangerous rabbit hole of misinformation and an opportunity for people to behave in a way they ordinarily wouldn’t in person. Off my soap box. Have a lovely Friday!#wordsfrommyheart #realoutfitgram #flamingosshoes #whiteboots #notmondaymoments
Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you all but enjoyed a nice long break. Heading back home after some snow time and I’m feeling re-energized (for now). Isn’t it funny how a change in the calendar can make you feel different? Are you a “new year, new you” kinda gal or more indifferent? I do like a good reset. Even though we’ll be doing more of the same early this year, I’m feeling more optimistic. For now. Cheers to 2021!

Also, posted in stories a nearly identical photo of us from last January at the top of @schweitzer_mountain. While the photos look the same, it’s fun to think that we now are Sandpoint homeowners! A positive outcome of 2020. #newyearonthemountain #snowbest #schweitzermountain #skifamily
Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all the boxes this year. Thinking of everyone not able to spend time with loved ones this year. I’m so grateful for our little family but really missing my parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, my in-laws. Over a year seems far too long to be apart; but we all need to continue to be safe. It matters. #christmassweater #christmas2020 #staysafestayhome #vintagesweater

Like the new-to-me homemade marshmallow recipe, @thekirstyfiles and I have the pleasure of bringing to you in partnership with @pacific_place. We encourage you to invite a few pals to a zoom date, pop a bottle of bubbly, and create these delicious confections together. I promise they’re relatively fool proof (I pulled them off!) AND a sugar-high afternoon spent with friends (even virtually) will be sure to get you in the holiday spirit! Tune in to Pacific Place’s IGTV or YouTube to see the full tutorial, including my gaff when my marshmallow began moving into the “hard ball” territory (note: this recipe does require a candy thermometer and the ability to read it!). The belly laughs, chit chat, and groans (as we tried on a number of jeans) provided the escape from reality that I needed. Other things I love? Soft luxury cashmere, designer denim that fits like a glove, and packable hats (yes, packable!). All can be found @willaseattle; a small, women-owned boutique located in the heart of the Queen Anne neighborhood in Seattle. Be sure to check out our stories as @thekirstyfiles and I share holiday-perfect gifts for your sister, mother, girlfriends...yourself!
