I get a lot of questions about investment pieces. What is an investment piece? What should be the return on investment on your clothes? Basically, how do you choose what to spend your money on?
Unfortunately, there is no equation that simply solves the question of “Wardrobe ROI.” In essence, buy what you love and you will find a way to wear it. Within reason. I’m not talking about buying fancy ball gowns here. Unless, of course, you’re a member of the royal family!
Begin by asking yourself the following questions:
- How many ways can I wear this item?
- Can I wear it for various occasions? For example, events, work and weekend wear, etc.
- Do I already have pieces in my wardrobe that will create an outfit with this piece?
- Is this piece within my budget? (this should likely be your first question!)
What this investment piece is will be is as unique as my reader’s styles. For example, if you dress-up for your career, perhaps a quality pair of heels or a classically tailored blazer would be a wise investment. Or, if you live in a cooler climate, a well-made winter coat could be a smart buy. Likewise, if you’re a casual mama on-the-go, go ahead and buy that pair of designer sneakers (can’t imagine who that could be?!).
Investment pieces don’t necessarily mean practical. As I said above, I’m a huge advocate for buying only pieces that you LOVE (all caps). Yes, only pieces that you absolutely must have. My reasoning is this: you will find joy in getting dressed each morning by easily pairing clothes that you feel good in and creating outfits that make you happy.
When I saw this sequin skirt in the Alice + Olivia outlet, I knew that I could wear it in a variety of ways and for a number of occasions. Of course, it’s simple to imagine this sequined number dressed up with a silk tank and high heels. But, in the dressing room, I had it paired with a concert tee and sneakers, and that looked cool too! I also envisioned a blazer and bootie look perfect for client meetings or networking events.
And while a sequin skirt may be out of your comfort zone, I am personally looking for unique, special pieces that will make my looks stand out. Considering my profession and personal style, I knew that a sequin skirt fit neatly into my wardrobe plan, if you will. Again, your investment piece is likely very different – a bootie, a classic LBD, or a cashmere sweater. Buy what you love and you know you will wear.
{outfit details} skirt: Alice + Olivia (also obsessing over this one) | sweater: Something Navy x Treasure & Bond | sneakers: Golden Goose | glasses: Moscot NYC (found at Eye Eye)
Need further proof that this sequin skirt is an investment piece in my wardrobe? Stay tuned tomorrow as as I will be wearing this same skirt in an entirely different way. How’s that for “Wardrobe ROI?”
