Holiday Dressing From Your Closet

November 10, 2017

Sequin TrousersSequin Pants for Special OccasionSequin Pants for Evening WearDressing up for holiday events doesn’t mean you have to blow your budget.  Especially this time of year, when you would rather be spending on others (ahem, the season of giving is upon us!).  And while I always advocate for treating yo’ self, we all want to stretch our dollars a bit further this time of year.

The holiday season is also when we get together to celebrate friends, family, a job well-done, and year-end.  But just because you want to look and feel your best, doesn’t mean you should be buying clothes that won’t see the light of day until this time next year.  Earlier this week, I posted about buying a dress on a budget.  And today’s outfit offers inspiration about how you can also mix and match clothes you may already have in your closet to create a special occasion outfit.

Granted, the black sequin pants may scream special occasion.  Of course, I would argue that they’re just as cool for day wear when paired with sneakers and a white tee shirt.  But I wear these pants throughout the year; because everyone needs a little shimmer year-round.  And by adding a classic blazer, I’m taking a page from the tuxedo to create a classicly chic, holiday look.  To add extra sparkle and interest (key for holiday gatherings!), I’ve completed this look with metallic brocade sandals and glittering statement earrings.

How to Wear a Blazer for Evening WearTarget Merona Lulu Brocade Block HeelIn the spirit of sharing, I must tell you about a shopping event close to my heart.  My favorite local boutique, Queen Anne Dispatch, is celebrating their 30th Anniversary with a big blow out!  Come shop, sip cocktails, and share in the celebration next Friday evening, November 17th.  30% off the entire store (yes, you read that right), will be offered all day.  But the real fun begins after dark, with cocktails and a live DJ.  I’ll be there, as will several other Seattle bloggers, local jewelry designers, and the fabulous QAD sales team.  Hope to see you there!

Oh, and it’s worth mentioning that both my blazer and sequin trousers are Queen Anne Dispatch finds from years past.  Stop in to discover what treasures you can add to your holiday look!

Shimmering Holiday Attire

December 22, 2016

What to wear when holiday entertainingYou’re hosting the holidays at home…or you’re lucky enough to attend someone else’s home for the holidays. Now what to wear? You want to be festive yet not too dressy, and functional enough to put the finishing touches on your favorite dishes (not-to-mention, clear the dishes…washing is reserved for husbands!). And who are we kidding? Comfort is king when you’re sitting around your table enjoying good friends, conversation, and holiday food!

Metallic Holiday Sweater

An easy way to add a little sparkle to your holidays is to pair a metallic sweater with black trousers or dark denim. It’s a snap to pull together because, frankly, you’re too busy this time of year to spend time in your closet creating a mind-blowing ensemble. Plus the look is casual enough for entertaining at home yet suitably dressy for your special occasion.

Some sparkling inspiration:

I’m also loving this sweater by Subtle Luxury (a year-round, subtle sparkle). Seattlites, you can find yours at Queen Anne Dispatch.

Don’t forget that today is the final day to enter our *GIVEAWAY* with Julep cosmetics.  Check out Monday’s post for all of the entry details. The deadline is 11:59 pm PST Friday, December 23rd.

Thank you all for your continued support throughout the year. I am very grateful to be a small part of your lives.

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!

With love, Jenn

Simplified Holiday Preparations

November 6, 2016

Holiday Cocktail Party Attire‘Tis the season to start thinking about your holiday calendar. Although it’s early November, now is the time to begin making your shopping plans and preparing for your holiday festivities.  I know, my heart just began racing too!

But you can make it easy on yourself!  First, simplify your list.  I try to prepare in advance (something I rarely say, given that I am a moderately successful procrastinator) by really giving consideration to who is on my shopping list and what they would enjoy receiving as a gift.  One key to my success is shopping the bi-annual “Friends & Family” event at my favorite local boutique, Queen Anne Dispatch.  This Friday, November 11th (all-day) they are extending 20% off their entire store.  And not just to their true friends and family, but to everyone…including non-Seattlites (because they happen to have a successful shipping business as well). I stock up on favorites like Voluspa candles for teacher and hostess gifts, SmartWool socks for my husband, Tocca fragrance for girlfriends, and a vast array of playful art supplies, adorable stuffies, and small toys perfect for stocking stuffers! Funny side note: throughout the year, my kids borrow my phone while I’m shopping and take pictures of things they want on their Christmas lists!

Seattle Style Blogger Queen Anne DispatchHow to style a sheer blouseHoliday Party AttireAnother key to simplifying your to-do list: don’t over-think your holiday outfits.  While some more formal occasions may necessitate you purchasing a special outfit, most often you can find pieces within your closet to dress-up and make special for all of your holiday events.  For example, this stretch jersey pencil skirt is a year-round closet work horse – perfect for both the office and after hours fun.  Make this simple skirt more special by adding a festive, intricate blouse in a bright color.  I love the cut-out detailing that also runs down the arms and, the ruffled collar complete with ties, makes this one special.  Also, the sheerness and cutouts make the conservative cut more sexy; perfect for holiday cocktails.  Add some sparkle with a few stand-out accessories, including this clutch in a similar shade, and you’re ready to ring-in the season!Hobo International teal clutchHoliday Cocktail Party Attire

Seattle Style BloggerDid I mention there’s a party? In addition to offering a stellar discount on all the goodies in their store, Queen Anne Dispatch also hosts a kickin’ party Friday evening; complete with a DJ, drinks, and snacks.  I’ll be there shopping – hope you can stop in!

Patriotic Chic

July 1, 2016

Fourth of July StyleThe brand of this sheath dress is “Pool to Party” and it couldn’t be more aptly named! After a day at the pool, what better to slip on over a suit to head into an evening soiree?! So effortlessly chic, especially with the bronze leaf detailing at the neck.  And, you can wear this dress casually with a flat sandal (as I’ve done here), or create a dressier vibe by adding a wedge espadrille or strappy heel…couldn’t be easier!

Red, White & Blue StyleAs stated previously, I advocate for investing in pieces that you love and will get use out of in your wardrobe.  A red dress can be worn year-round, but add a denim topper and some patriotic accessories and you are Independence Day festive.  Cheers!Patriotic StrawsPool to Party Sheath DressFor my outfit and more Independence Day style, stop in at Queen Anne Dispatch.  If you’re not in the Seattle area, they’ll happily ship these goodies and so much more fun and unique pieces from their fabulous boutique!

Holiday Prepping, Independence Day Style

June 29, 2016

American Flag ToteCan you believe that Independence Day is around the corner? And it’s a 3-day weekend too?! The 4th of July is my absolute favorite holiday.  No gifts; just sunshine, good food and friends, and fireworks!

Boho Tunic BlouseIndependence Day StyleIn honor of summer and to get you in the holiday spirit, I’ll be sharing some outfit inspiration for the remainder of the week.  Today’s outfit demonstrates that you don’t have to be so literal when planning your holiday attire.  While I admire those people that pull out an entire stars and stripes outfit for the occasion, you can also mix and match clothes already in your wardrobe, yet still be festive.  Pairing blue and white (white jeans are a staple for my summer wardrobe) and adding a pop of red is a fun way to be patriotic.  Go the extra mile, and find some accessories that really get you humming the Star Spangled Banner.

4th of July OutfitAmerican StyleBoho Style

This outfit is perfect for Seattle’s temperate (read: temperamental) climate.  For this look, I’m imagining a backyard BBQ or a day spent at the park, awaiting the fire works.  Did you know that it doesn’t get dark in Seattle until nearly 10:00 pm on the 4th of July? That means for a day spent at the park, you definitely need to pack layers!  These photos were taken at Gas Works Park at the north end of Lake Union, where the city sets off their fireworks display each year.

Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted t Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted the new year feeling inspired with a renewed intention for my account; to share with you the goodies I love, wear, try. Unfiltered and honest. That’s what I’m here for. But then...2021 arrived feeling much like her older sister, 2020. Instead, I’ve avoided a lot of social media; choosing to tune into various news outlets and into my family. So, HERE WE ARE. A post proving that I got dressed yesterday, wearing some of my new favorites (these @flamingosshoes white boots!) and steady stand-bys (year 2 wearing this @notmondaymercantile beanie on repeat). I took the kids out after school to run a couple of errands and connect with a business I love to support; we made plans for a spring share. Man, it felt good to get out! And now, I’m posting early before I’ve read the morning news. So, it’s happened.

Please stay safe, remain respectful, and true to yourself. Social media is a beautiful way to connect, create, and inspire...but can also be a dangerous rabbit hole of misinformation and an opportunity for people to behave in a way they ordinarily wouldn’t in person. Off my soap box. Have a lovely Friday!#wordsfrommyheart #realoutfitgram #flamingosshoes #whiteboots #notmondaymoments
Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you all but enjoyed a nice long break. Heading back home after some snow time and I’m feeling re-energized (for now). Isn’t it funny how a change in the calendar can make you feel different? Are you a “new year, new you” kinda gal or more indifferent? I do like a good reset. Even though we’ll be doing more of the same early this year, I’m feeling more optimistic. For now. Cheers to 2021!

Also, posted in stories a nearly identical photo of us from last January at the top of @schweitzer_mountain. While the photos look the same, it’s fun to think that we now are Sandpoint homeowners! A positive outcome of 2020. #newyearonthemountain #snowbest #schweitzermountain #skifamily
Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all the boxes this year. Thinking of everyone not able to spend time with loved ones this year. I’m so grateful for our little family but really missing my parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, my in-laws. Over a year seems far too long to be apart; but we all need to continue to be safe. It matters. #christmassweater #christmas2020 #staysafestayhome #vintagesweater
Let’s make merry! Although holiday traditions ma Let’s make merry! Although holiday traditions may look different this year; we have an opportunity to get creative and share in new experiences. Like the new-to-me homemade marshmallow recipe, @thekirstyfiles and I have the pleasure of bringing to you in partnership with @pacific_place. We encourage you to invite a few pals to a zoom date, pop a bottle of bubbly, and create these delicious confections together. I promise they’re relatively fool proof (I pulled them off!) AND a sugar-high afternoon spent with friends (even virtually) will be sure to get you in the holiday spirit! Tune in to Pacific Place’s IGTV or YouTube to see the full tutorial, including my gaff when my marshmallow began moving into the “hard ball” territory (note: this recipe does require a candy thermometer and the ability to read it!). The belly laughs, chit chat, and groans (as we tried on a number of jeans) provided the escape from reality that I needed. Sometimes you don’t realize just how much you miss something until you get to enjoy it again!

Other things I love? Soft luxury cashmere, designer denim that fits like a glove, and packable hats (yes, packable!). All can be found @willaseattle; a small, women-owned boutique located in the heart of the Queen Anne neighborhood in Seattle. Be sure to check out our stories as @thekirstyfiles and I share holiday-perfect gifts for your sister, mother, girlfriends...yourself! Lucky for Kirsty and I, our husbands also know the lovely owner, Liz (and she has our wishlists on file)!

Also very near and dear to my heart, Willa is the epitome of shopping local. The shelves are stocked with unique, small business designs; including many Seattle businesses. When you shop local, you not only support your community but also curate a look all your own!

Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for you Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for yourself, aka #stayathomestyle. Sure, 2020 may be the year of the sweatpant (combined with a sleeping bag-like coat, as seen here). And yes, a mask chain is this year’s hottest accessory. BUT I still take care to actually get dressed each day. And while lipstick may no longer be a part of my daily routine (I mean, was it ever??), it’s still important to be pulled together..if only for my own mental health. And even if no one else sees it but the grocery clerk. #whatmamaworemonday #sweatpantsseason

On the eve of Black Friday sales bonanza, I hope t On the eve of Black Friday sales bonanza, I hope to inspire, remind, urge, and even beg you to ignore all of the crazy cyber sales that have been creeping into your inbox for the past week and instead SHOP SMALL this holiday season. Yes, perhaps it’s less convenient and even less of a “deal” but this pandemic is putting an even greater strain on the small and local businesses that are the absolute life blood of our communities. And, in addition to supporting an entrepreneur and neighbor, you’ll likely find more creative, individual, and unique gifts for your loved ones by shopping a small business.
