Jumpstart Your Morning Routine

April 27, 2016

e4a200ce5198648cf9b789ab9f58c7d1

I’ve given up caffeine…I know, I even annoy myself.  In the spirit of ‘Wellness Wednesday’ I’m providing some tips to get yourself out of bed and out the door without that morning cup of joe.  Or, maybe even with it! No judgement here.

landscape_nrm_1424861698-woman-staring-at-phone-before-bed

  1. Put the cell phone down. My morning routine is actually beginning the night before when I stow my electronics at least 30 minutes prior to my head hitting the pillow. Many studies have linked cell phone usage in the evening hours to sleep depravation.  This is likely due to the blue wavelengths emitted from most cell phones, which can interrupt the body’s natural circadian rhythm.  Blue light, naturally found in sunlight as well, causes the body to be alert; however, during the night time hours, it suppresses the body’s melatonin levels, which are required for rest.  Shut down that email and get off Instagram already, it’s time to catch some winks!
  2. Be consistent.  I am also trying to go to bed AND get out of bed at the same time each day (I do cheat on the weekends…I’m not that annoying!)  When your body gets into a rhythm, it actually makes it easier to rise and shine each morning.  I like to get up before the rest of my house; most mornings this is when I get my workout in or I treasure the silence of a quiet house and catch-up on email (or shop online).9f42f8cf_lemon-juice-main.xxxlarge_2x
  3. Hydrate. And I don’t mean simply pouring water over coffee grinds! I start my morning with a 12 ounce glass of cold water followed by warm water and lemon (you may remember this from a previous post).  In addition to the boost to your immune system the vitamin C provides, lemon also increases energy as it enters your digestive system.  I have also started to add a dash of cayenne pepper, which stimulates your circulatory system, aids digestion, and regulates your blood sugar. Read more about this winning combination here.Dry-Body-Brushes
  4. Brush your shoulders off.  And your entire body while you’re at it! I have become religious about dry brushing.  While I am certainly enjoying the benefit of smoother skin, I definitely feel invigorated and more energized starting my day with a dry brush prior to getting in the shower.  After brushing (see the technique in my previous post), I spray my body with a moisturizing oil and then soap up in the shower.  The oil hydrates my skin, yet doesn’t feel greasy after rinsing off in the shower.  I’m loving this body serum by One Love Organics.

What’s your morning routine? And, do you take cream or sugar?? Don’t stop reading because I’m not caffeinated. Thanks for checking in! ~Jenn

Wellness Wednesday: Morning Rituals

January 27, 2016

shutterstock_29101018-e1368454047107If you’re like me, the new year often brings a new set of high expectations for yourself.  And, like me, it may only take a couple of weeks in to feel frustrated with your seeming failure.  This year I’m trying to be kinder to myself.  With this mantra in mind, I’m adopting a few simple changes to my mourning routine that can help me feel better prepared for whatever comes my way the rest of the day.

First on the proverbial list (some habits are hard to break), drinking more water. I know, everyone says it, but it’s true.  A better complexion, healthier immune system, and increased energy are all attributed to hydration.  It’s just so cold in the winter, and I “need” another cup of coffee…the excuses can be endless.

Each morning I have begun to start my day with a cup of hot water and a slice of lemon.  Not-to-worry, I haven’t gone completely off the deep end…coffee follows! In addition to drinking more water, the benefits of adding lemon to warm water are plentiful.  As you may know, the vitamin C in lemons offers a boost to your immune system.  However, drinking lemon water regularly also reduces inflammation, aids in digestion, and cleanses your system of toxins.  Lemon also gives you an energy boost when it enters your digestive system, and can even reduce anxiety and depression!

After lemon water, a healthy breakfast added to my morning routine gets me ready for the day.  Between preparing food for my family and getting everyone out of the door, sometimes breakfast ends up being a last minute preparation of toast or cereal.  By mid-morning, I’m starving and more likely to make poor diet decisions (these may include eating chocolate chips while writing this blog post!).

I was inspired to try making chia pudding at home after reading this recipe shared by the team at The Zoe Report (if you don’t subscribe already, you really should!).  I’ve had a few misses, but now I’ve perfected the art of this 5 minute meal prep, which you make the night before.  I would suggest that you stir the chia and almond milk mixture well, lest you have clumps of unsoaked chia (read: not tasty).  I have started making individual puddings in a sealable container (I actually use cleaned pint containers from the gelato I enjoy after the kids go to bed!) – this way I can shake the chia and milk together to ensure proper combination.  I also stir the pudding again about an hour after its been in the fridge (but before it fully sets).  Finally, I recommend that you combine the chia and milk prior to adding the maple syrup (or any sticky type of sweetener), again so that the chia doesn’t stick together, creating crunchy lumps in your pudding.  Delish topped with pomegranate seeds and granola, as suggested, or any kind of berries also makes a great topping!IMG_3846For awhile now, I have tried to be kinder and gentler with my sensitive skin.  In my youth, I used to think that the stronger the scrub or the more intense the burn, the more the product must be working.  However, with the recent revelation that I have rosacea, and sensitive skin, I’m trying to be more mindful of the products (namely the ingredients) that I am using.  None of the popular retinols or acid treatments for this gal!

Recently, my aesthetician turned me on to Hannes Dóttir, an organic skincare line using mineral rich ingredients sourced from the fjords of Iceland.  In particular, I love the Seamasque which is formulated from sea kelp, iodine, and spearmint oil, and designed to balance skin and reduce inflammation.  I mix about a half a teaspoon with warm water and gently massage it onto my damp face before getting in the shower.  I then leave it on while I scrub my body, wash my hair, etc.; allowing the masque to penetrate while the warm water opens my pores.  Then I rinse (again, gently massaging the gritty texture) prior to getting out.  My skin has felt amazing and has more of a healthy glow since using this entire product line.  I’ve been so pleased, I had to share!

What do you think of “Wellness Wednesday”?  Please leave any thoughts, suggestions, or questions below – I would love to hear from you!  As always, thanks for reading. ~Jenn

Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted t Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted the new year feeling inspired with a renewed intention for my account; to share with you the goodies I love, wear, try. Unfiltered and honest. That’s what I’m here for. But then...2021 arrived feeling much like her older sister, 2020. Instead, I’ve avoided a lot of social media; choosing to tune into various news outlets and into my family. So, HERE WE ARE. A post proving that I got dressed yesterday, wearing some of my new favorites (these @flamingosshoes white boots!) and steady stand-bys (year 2 wearing this @notmondaymercantile beanie on repeat). I took the kids out after school to run a couple of errands and connect with a business I love to support; we made plans for a spring share. Man, it felt good to get out! And now, I’m posting early before I’ve read the morning news. So, it’s happened.

Please stay safe, remain respectful, and true to yourself. Social media is a beautiful way to connect, create, and inspire...but can also be a dangerous rabbit hole of misinformation and an opportunity for people to behave in a way they ordinarily wouldn’t in person. Off my soap box. Have a lovely Friday!#wordsfrommyheart #realoutfitgram #flamingosshoes #whiteboots #notmondaymoments
Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you all but enjoyed a nice long break. Heading back home after some snow time and I’m feeling re-energized (for now). Isn’t it funny how a change in the calendar can make you feel different? Are you a “new year, new you” kinda gal or more indifferent? I do like a good reset. Even though we’ll be doing more of the same early this year, I’m feeling more optimistic. For now. Cheers to 2021!

Also, posted in stories a nearly identical photo of us from last January at the top of @schweitzer_mountain. While the photos look the same, it’s fun to think that we now are Sandpoint homeowners! A positive outcome of 2020. #newyearonthemountain #snowbest #schweitzermountain #skifamily
Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all the boxes this year. Thinking of everyone not able to spend time with loved ones this year. I’m so grateful for our little family but really missing my parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, my in-laws. Over a year seems far too long to be apart; but we all need to continue to be safe. It matters. #christmassweater #christmas2020 #staysafestayhome #vintagesweater
Let’s make merry! Although holiday traditions ma Let’s make merry! Although holiday traditions may look different this year; we have an opportunity to get creative and share in new experiences. Like the new-to-me homemade marshmallow recipe, @thekirstyfiles and I have the pleasure of bringing to you in partnership with @pacific_place. We encourage you to invite a few pals to a zoom date, pop a bottle of bubbly, and create these delicious confections together. I promise they’re relatively fool proof (I pulled them off!) AND a sugar-high afternoon spent with friends (even virtually) will be sure to get you in the holiday spirit! Tune in to Pacific Place’s IGTV or YouTube to see the full tutorial, including my gaff when my marshmallow began moving into the “hard ball” territory (note: this recipe does require a candy thermometer and the ability to read it!). Cheers to making the most out of holiday 2020! #homemademarshmallows #pacificplaceseattle #craftingtogether
Ooooh...how I love a good shopping day with a frie Ooooh...how I love a good shopping day with a friend. The belly laughs, chit chat, and groans (as we tried on a number of jeans) provided the escape from reality that I needed. Sometimes you don’t realize just how much you miss something until you get to enjoy it again!

Other things I love? Soft luxury cashmere, designer denim that fits like a glove, and packable hats (yes, packable!). All can be found @willaseattle; a small, women-owned boutique located in the heart of the Queen Anne neighborhood in Seattle. Be sure to check out our stories as @thekirstyfiles and I share holiday-perfect gifts for your sister, mother, girlfriends...yourself! Lucky for Kirsty and I, our husbands also know the lovely owner, Liz (and she has our wishlists on file)!

Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for you Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for yourself, aka #stayathomestyle. Sure, 2020 may be the year of the sweatpant (combined with a sleeping bag-like coat, as seen here). And yes, a mask chain is this year’s hottest accessory. BUT I still take care to actually get dressed each day. And while lipstick may no longer be a part of my daily routine (I mean, was it ever??), it’s still important to be pulled together..if only for my own mental health. And even if no one else sees it but the grocery clerk. #whatmamaworemonday #sweatpantsseason

On the eve of Black Friday sales bonanza, I hope t On the eve of Black Friday sales bonanza, I hope to inspire, remind, urge, and even beg you to ignore all of the crazy cyber sales that have been creeping into your inbox for the past week and instead SHOP SMALL this holiday season. Yes, perhaps it’s less convenient and even less of a “deal” but this pandemic is putting an even greater strain on the small and local businesses that are the absolute life blood of our communities. And, in addition to supporting an entrepreneur and neighbor, you’ll likely find more creative, individual, and unique gifts for your loved ones by shopping a small business.
