Holiday Dressing From Your Closet

November 10, 2017

Sequin TrousersSequin Pants for Special OccasionSequin Pants for Evening WearDressing up for holiday events doesn’t mean you have to blow your budget.  Especially this time of year, when you would rather be spending on others (ahem, the season of giving is upon us!).  And while I always advocate for treating yo’ self, we all want to stretch our dollars a bit further this time of year.

The holiday season is also when we get together to celebrate friends, family, a job well-done, and year-end.  But just because you want to look and feel your best, doesn’t mean you should be buying clothes that won’t see the light of day until this time next year.  Earlier this week, I posted about buying a dress on a budget.  And today’s outfit offers inspiration about how you can also mix and match clothes you may already have in your closet to create a special occasion outfit.

Granted, the black sequin pants may scream special occasion.  Of course, I would argue that they’re just as cool for day wear when paired with sneakers and a white tee shirt.  But I wear these pants throughout the year; because everyone needs a little shimmer year-round.  And by adding a classic blazer, I’m taking a page from the tuxedo to create a classicly chic, holiday look.  To add extra sparkle and interest (key for holiday gatherings!), I’ve completed this look with metallic brocade sandals and glittering statement earrings.

How to Wear a Blazer for Evening WearTarget Merona Lulu Brocade Block HeelIn the spirit of sharing, I must tell you about a shopping event close to my heart.  My favorite local boutique, Queen Anne Dispatch, is celebrating their 30th Anniversary with a big blow out!  Come shop, sip cocktails, and share in the celebration next Friday evening, November 17th.  30% off the entire store (yes, you read that right), will be offered all day.  But the real fun begins after dark, with cocktails and a live DJ.  I’ll be there, as will several other Seattle bloggers, local jewelry designers, and the fabulous QAD sales team.  Hope to see you there!

Oh, and it’s worth mentioning that both my blazer and sequin trousers are Queen Anne Dispatch finds from years past.  Stop in to discover what treasures you can add to your holiday look!

Outfits: New Years Eve Style

December 22, 2015

IMG_3684edit

With the entertaining season nearing its end, New Years Eve is the perfect opportunity to close out 2015 with a bang!  Now’s the time to amp up the sparkle, color, and shine.  Whether you’re adding a bright lip color, sparkling accessories, or sequined pants (or all of the above!) – have a little fun with your style for the final party of the year!

Kirsty and I have styled several outfits from our favorite Seattle boutique, Queen Anne Dispatch (QAD).  You can find embellished dresses, stylish skirts, party pants, and many shining accessories to create the perfect NYE look here.  Not from the Seattle area?  Not to worry…they ship!  If you see something you love in this post, ask for Sabrina – she knows what we’re wearing.  Below you will find several of our favorite pieces styled for a festive and fun celebration.

IMG_3897editThese sequin pants are the life of the party!  I’ve worn them several times this holiday season; with a dressy top (like here) or dressed-down with a drapey tee and flats.  I’m even considering a sweater and sneaker pairing for my next casual night out with girlfriends.  I’m an advocate for getting more wear out of the special pieces in your wardrobe…believe it or not, sequins can get a lot of mileage!IMG_3875editIMG_3917edit

IMG_3664editAlthough I’m wearing my “go-to” black, I’ve added a pop of color in this look with red accessories mirrored in a red lip.  It’s fun and festive while not being too over-the-top.  In addition, the subtle brocade pattern on the skirt gives the outfit more depth, while the fur-lined wrap is the perfect, sophisticated topper for a chilly evening out.

Friday Favorites: NYE Outfit Inspirations

December 19, 2014

Did you know that Kirsty and I partner on blog posts from states away? (We’re separated by Oregon).  It’s infrequent that we actually get to spend time together, instead of trading our usual texts and emails.  The past couple of years we have reunited over the holidays – typically around New Year’s.  Therefore, we thought it only fitting that we should share a New Year’s Eve-inspired post to get you “stylishly prepared” for your celebration, whatever that may include.

And…you still have time to order your festive attire in time for NYE without incurring extra shipping costs.  So now that your Christmas shopping is checked-off, let’s get started!

Sequin Pants (Jenn)

Trouvé sequin jogger

Metallic clutchAlthough these pants are a jogger (read: “sweatpant-like silhouette”), the sequins inherently elevate them to fancy attire.  With the addition of a few special accessories, like the red shoes, metallic clutch, and oversized, gem-stone earrings, this look is entirely party-ready.  However, don’t reserve your sequins only for the holidays! I’ve worn these pants with a simple white tee and wedge sneakers for a downtown cool, yet casual look. I love sequins 365 days a year!

Nordstrom Trouvé Sequin Pants

Pants: Trouvé (check out my picture on the Nordstrom site!) | Sweater: Topshop (sale!) | Heels: Jessica Simpson (mine several years old) | Clutch: Marc Jacobs for Target (similar) | Bracelet: J.Crew (similar) | Sunglasses: Chloé | Earrings: Anthropologie (last year)

Other Sequin Pants: Black (similar to mine) | Silver | Sweat Pant-Like | Gold | Patterned

Lace Dress (Kirsty)

This might be cheating a little bit because I just posted about this dress and its party appropriateness; however, I love it so much I’m gonna talk about it again.  Adding lace to your little party dress adds so much more personality and interest.  It’s vintage flare makes it special and lace is always more flattering, helping to camouflage flaws (say that 5 times fast – there’s your NYE drinking game, if you are into that kind of stuff, of course).

Dress: Dolce Vita | Jacket: Forever 21 (similar) | Heels: Banana Republic | Earrings: Vintage | Lips: M.A.C ‘MAC Red’

Other Lace Dresses: Plus-Size | Black & White | Tank | Strapless | Metallic

Metallic Dress (Jenn)

Kenise Reflection Dress Madewell Car Coat

Lucia K Taylor Hematite EarringsNothing says that you’re ready to ring in the New Year like a metallic dress.  The style of this dress is so simple and chic, yet festive.  I’ve added some color with the red lip and shoe (clearly a wardrobe favorite!).  Meanwhile, I’ve kept my other accessories in the same grey and metallic tone; allowing the dress to take center stage.  The tweed metallic texture of the dress is even reminiscent of the sparkle of champagne.

Kensie Reflection Dress

Dress: Kensie | Coat: Madewell (similar) | Heels:  Jessica Simpson (this year’s version) | Clutch: Marc Jacobs for Target (similar) | Earrings: Lucia K Jewelry (Kirsty’s jewelry line!) | Lips: NARS ‘Cruella’

Other Metallic Dresses: Copper | Tulip Shape | Gunmetal | Sequin | Fit & Flare

Jumpsuit (Kirsty)

DV Dolce Vita JumpsuitFor some reason a jumpsuit seems to up your style ante, but in reality it takes much less effort in the fashion department to wear because it is simply one piece of clothing, instead of two.  I am not sure why I am so devoted and utterly in love with the romper/jumpsuit, I just am.  I will admit that using the bathroom is just a bit more effort, clearly not a deal breaker though.  Simply add some amazing shoes and jewelry, and your done.  It’s like the benefit of a dress without having to think about tights or shaving your legs.  Add some flash tattoos, and you might be the coolest girl in the city.
Although the colors of this romper are more summery, the style of this romper is spot on NYE fabulous.  If this were black, your little black romper could replace your little black dress.  Not kidding. The jumpsuit below is a jersey material (read: giant T-shirt), for those of you who prioritize comfort…no more excuses.
Temporary Tattoos: Flash Tattoos | Strappy Heels: Sam Edelman
Other Jumpsuits: Tank | Long Sleeves | Metallic | Halter | Tuxedo-Inspired

Cheers to your special celebration! Wishing you a wonderful holiday season and Happy New Year!

As always, thanks for reading! ~Kirsty & Jenn

Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted t Each day I’ve intended to post here. I greeted the new year feeling inspired with a renewed intention for my account; to share with you the goodies I love, wear, try. Unfiltered and honest. That’s what I’m here for. But then...2021 arrived feeling much like her older sister, 2020. Instead, I’ve avoided a lot of social media; choosing to tune into various news outlets and into my family. So, HERE WE ARE. A post proving that I got dressed yesterday, wearing some of my new favorites (these @flamingosshoes white boots!) and steady stand-bys (year 2 wearing this @notmondaymercantile beanie on repeat). I took the kids out after school to run a couple of errands and connect with a business I love to support; we made plans for a spring share. Man, it felt good to get out! And now, I’m posting early before I’ve read the morning news. So, it’s happened.

Please stay safe, remain respectful, and true to yourself. Social media is a beautiful way to connect, create, and inspire...but can also be a dangerous rabbit hole of misinformation and an opportunity for people to behave in a way they ordinarily wouldn’t in person. Off my soap box. Have a lovely Friday!#wordsfrommyheart #realoutfitgram #flamingosshoes #whiteboots #notmondaymoments
Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you Happy New Year my dear friends! I’ve missed you all but enjoyed a nice long break. Heading back home after some snow time and I’m feeling re-energized (for now). Isn’t it funny how a change in the calendar can make you feel different? Are you a “new year, new you” kinda gal or more indifferent? I do like a good reset. Even though we’ll be doing more of the same early this year, I’m feeling more optimistic. For now. Cheers to 2021!

Also, posted in stories a nearly identical photo of us from last January at the top of @schweitzer_mountain. While the photos look the same, it’s fun to think that we now are Sandpoint homeowners! A positive outcome of 2020. #newyearonthemountain #snowbest #schweitzermountain #skifamily
Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all Snow plus a Christmas sweater...I’m checking all the boxes this year. Thinking of everyone not able to spend time with loved ones this year. I’m so grateful for our little family but really missing my parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, my in-laws. Over a year seems far too long to be apart; but we all need to continue to be safe. It matters. #christmassweater #christmas2020 #staysafestayhome #vintagesweater
Let’s make merry! Although holiday traditions ma Let’s make merry! Although holiday traditions may look different this year; we have an opportunity to get creative and share in new experiences. Like the new-to-me homemade marshmallow recipe, @thekirstyfiles and I have the pleasure of bringing to you in partnership with @pacific_place. We encourage you to invite a few pals to a zoom date, pop a bottle of bubbly, and create these delicious confections together. I promise they’re relatively fool proof (I pulled them off!) AND a sugar-high afternoon spent with friends (even virtually) will be sure to get you in the holiday spirit! Tune in to Pacific Place’s IGTV or YouTube to see the full tutorial, including my gaff when my marshmallow began moving into the “hard ball” territory (note: this recipe does require a candy thermometer and the ability to read it!). Cheers to making the most out of holiday 2020! #homemademarshmallows #pacificplaceseattle #craftingtogether
Ooooh...how I love a good shopping day with a frie Ooooh...how I love a good shopping day with a friend. The belly laughs, chit chat, and groans (as we tried on a number of jeans) provided the escape from reality that I needed. Sometimes you don’t realize just how much you miss something until you get to enjoy it again!

Other things I love? Soft luxury cashmere, designer denim that fits like a glove, and packable hats (yes, packable!). All can be found @willaseattle; a small, women-owned boutique located in the heart of the Queen Anne neighborhood in Seattle. Be sure to check out our stories as @thekirstyfiles and I share holiday-perfect gifts for your sister, mother, girlfriends...yourself! Lucky for Kirsty and I, our husbands also know the lovely owner, Liz (and she has our wishlists on file)!

Also very near and dear to my heart, Willa is the epitome of shopping local. The shelves are stocked with unique, small business designs; including many Seattle businesses. When you shop local, you not only support your community but also curate a look all your own!

Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for you Continued chronicles of dressing stylishly for yourself, aka #stayathomestyle. Sure, 2020 may be the year of the sweatpant (combined with a sleeping bag-like coat, as seen here). And yes, a mask chain is this year’s hottest accessory. BUT I still take care to actually get dressed each day. And while lipstick may no longer be a part of my daily routine (I mean, was it ever??), it’s still important to be pulled together..if only for my own mental health. And even if no one else sees it but the grocery clerk. #whatmamaworemonday #sweatpantsseason

Yes, perhaps it’s less convenient and even less of a “deal” but this pandemic is putting an even greater strain on the small and local businesses that are the absolute life blood of our communities. And, in addition to supporting an entrepreneur and neighbor, you’ll likely find more creative, individual, and unique gifts for your loved ones by shopping a small business.
